My first SOG multitool

Yesterday, a package arrived from nelly1974, my goodies from a trade. In the box was my first SOG multitool, a Powerlock. I've owned several SOG knives before, and wasn't all that crazy about them to be honest. But this thing.....

First off, this is probably the best tool sheath that I have. Nice, heavy-duty leather, snap instead of Velcro...perfect! The skateboard tape was added by nelly, and I have to say that I agree with the add. Slippery tools can be an issue at work at times, not the cleanest environment. The tape gives the handles and lock tabs just the right amount of grippiness.

For someone who loves to flick OHO Gerber pliers, this sucker is fun to play with!

The first thing I did upon getting it was to flick it open like a balisong. Nice and smooth. I like the tool set that this shipped with. The file was modded to give a chisel end, which is very useful. The awl rocks! nice and pointy, great for what I use an awl at work for, which is usually creating gouges in wood for demonstrations of repair products. In addition to the implements in the handles, there were a couple of extra parts in the box - an additional blade, file, Phillips driver, and bottle opener/flat driver. All in all a very nice tool, one that I can't wait to put through its' paces at the store!

I got my powerlock from Kirk yesterday and there a monster

i took it to work today and it came in very handy on every job i used it on,this has to be the biggest MT ive had to date,hope you enjoy yours mate

JD, glad you're grooving on the Powerlock. I had one, and traded it away. Not a bad tool, just not for me.

@Zed- You're right, this is a big boy. Not sure that it's my biggest, as it seems to be about the same size as my original Supertool. It feels great in the hand though.

@Nuphoria - Polished surfaces and work don't go together very well for me. Paint, stain, oil, solvents - your hands can get pretty slick fast! Consider that I wear gloves around certain nasty chemicals/tints that are used in a machine that constantly needs adjusting, and the tape is a great idea.

@Lynn - How did you and the Powerlock not get along?

I took mine to work yesterday and it worked a treat, i used it in my molle pouch instead of the leather one as i like to wear it horizontaly, the leather one has the bit adapter at the bottom

It's pretty solid. A tiny bit of play, but nothing that I'm worried about. I have it at work with me right now, and it's seen some use. Doing just fine.

Love my powerlock. I don't really carry mine, it stays in the garage. It's the first thing I grab if I'm diagnosing/investigating a problem, since it saves a bunch of trips to the tool box. Compound leverage pliers are a beautiful thing, they're great to have if only for that one feature. If I could do it again, I wouldn't get BO since black works like under-hood camouflage.

JD, I traded my powerlock for a number of reasons. First, it's just too frickin' big. I'd never carry it except on the rare occasions when I'm helping out my electrician friend. I got it primarily for the benefit of the compound action on the wire cutters. On days when i do long wire runs, it'd save my hands. However... it's all metal. Not a great thing if you hand a tool off to a colleague messing with live wires. So, I just got a pair of compound leverage wire cutters/pliers with rubber grips, and traded away the Powerlock.

Aside from the insanely awesome wire-cutting ability of the Powerlock, there isn't a lot to love, for me. The can opener literally would not work. The scissors were as bad as those on a $3 pair on the Sheffield 12010. The saw was middle of the pack. I HATE semi serrated blades. I also discovered that I just do not like black oxide, which is the variety I got. I very much liked the flexibility of the socket driver, though.

So, for the amount I'd use it, and the kind of work I'd do with it, it just wasn't a winner for me.

Gotcha. I've heard about the scissors, and I'm not even going to bother. That's what the Executive on my keys is for. As for the can opener, they see a fair bit of use by me, especially opening tint at work. Haven't had to use the SOG for that yet, but I'll keep it in mind. And yeah, I can see where using an all metal tool could be a bit hazardous working around electricity.....

I'd recommend running your scissors through some paces, see how they work for YOUR needs. If they don't, then maybe swap them out for something more useful. A second blade or something. Same with the can opener. That is one of the benefits of the SOG MTs.

Keep in mind that the can opener can be sharpened and it will work MUCH better.

Mine has the scissors but im not convinced yet,ill give them a chance though, one thing is they dont lock properly unless i push the lock, all the other tools are fine though and lock ok, im not overbothered on the scissors not locking, i used mine for work last week and really enjoyed using it, these are one solid tool, although im still not sure about the handle covers yet,i might try them off and see, i also used my molle pouch instead of the powerplay leather pouch with bit at the bottom for the bit adapter, i like leather but for work i prefer my molle pouch worn horizontaly

I like the SOG implements in a PT-510, and I love the plier heads on a Powerlock. Mine has the gear covers too, but not the piano springs. Put together though, I'm not overly sold on the implements when fitted in the Powerlock handle, so mine has become a donor. I hope to get it back up and running with a load out I'm comfortable with someday, but this has taken a back seat as I've plenty of other reasonably heavy options (Swissgrip, Core, Swisstool, Charge AL) and so far I'm not missing using it

I might have a few bits not in use Alan, i know ive got a plain blade,saw,and a part serrated,not sure yet what im doing though with both ppp and PL but there getting there

In the meantime I've other stuff on the go though, and it's not causing a problem with it being out of commission.

It is a shame SOG haven't brought out a range of larger/beefier components to run in the larger tools, and we have to have the same file/saw/knives etc that go in their other tools $:-\$

i swapped the V-cutter from the bladeless PL and added the part serrated blade,the V is on the ppp now as i removed the wood saw i added as i would use the PL for outdoor stuff etc, just give me a shout mate when you need a part

the locks are not as smooth as LM's but i still like the idea of a tool thats easy to customise

(There's no option to ship abroad on the SOG site, and I have a hard time finding suppliers in Europe for spare parts - alternatively, I'll be equally happy if someone has a link to a webshop in Europe.)

I can get a reasonably good deal on a PowerLock, but since I wish to exchange the blade for a V-cutter (to make it more sheeple friendly) it's hardly attractive to buy it if I can't get my hands on that part...

(If I don't get a response here, I'll try posting my request in the trade forums, just figured I might have a better chance in the SOG forum)

I traded for a Powerlock a couple of months ago. Over all I really like mine. The scissors on mine work ok. Not nearly as well as Victorinox scissors but a lot better that the reviews I read said they would.
I have had a couple of other big multi-tools. A Leatherman Surge and a Victorinox Swisstool. The Swisstool was a better tool hands down. Better finished and the tools worked better with the exception of the pliers grip strength. Despite that I like the Powerlock better.

I just didn't really bond with the Swisstool the way I have the Powerlock.
I never liked the Surge I had and would not trade my Powerlock for two of them.

Heres my two sogs together

im really enjoying both of these and still cant help but fiddle and change parts on them, both have been good at work but i prefer the ppp as my daily carry and the powerlock for work, my scissors have got a little better with use but i still need to push the lock up now and then, i really like the pliers on both of these MT's and do see the benifit of the handle covers on the powerlock,

I have a bladeless Powerlock (with a V cutter instead of the knife) with the piano springs which lives in my car. I like it very much.

I took those handle covers off though, wasn't too impressed with them as they're a bit of a faff on and they stop the tool from closing properly - nice idea, doesn't work.

I'm fond of it because i'm not scared to use it to within an inch of it's life, it's a tough old boot.
