Oh man... Would love to swap my PowerAssist with a PowerLock... It is my first SOG and my first experience with an assisted knife, though it seems I'm kind of a control freak and do not like the idea of my knives jumping open :/

Hey guys, would like to ask a question and a request...

As mentioned above, I think what I have is a EOD B61 model. Just checked the box that it came with and it says B60...



I know that the only thing that differentiates the 61 from the 60 model is the blasting cap crimper. Searched online and even on SOGs site but can’t find pics showing actual differences between the 2 models.

So can anyone provide me with side by side or close-up shots of the 2?

I don't have those PLs, but I can say that trying to pin down SOG models with appropriate packaging and toolsets is a near-futile exercise. 

SOG really hasn't had their smurf together in a long time. But, the PL is always a great tool, regardless of the model designation inconsistencies. 

Edit: I should note, that I am referring to the newer tools, not always being consistent with the model designations.

Following RF52's recently concluded challenge I am currently thinking about adding a PowerLock to my array of multitools - 'collection' is too big a word for it.

This should be viewed against the background that I only have one SOG, namely the Power Access Deluxe. The Powerlock calls to me because of its predisposition to factory sanctioned modding.

So, a few questions to you guys:
Should I go for a brand new one (China) or try to secure a rarer older one (preferably still US made) - how rare are these anyway?
Set against the PAD, will I be disappointed with the PL's build quality? Does the answer depend on the choice between newer and older, and if yes how much? And compared to, say, a LM Wave?
Is the file any better than the PAD's? (I sure hope it is, can't be any worse at any rate )

Just to add I have finished reading Nix' challenge thread. I must admit that I somehow missed it while it was taking place, my only excuse being that I had two consecutive challenges going on at the time, not to mention summer vacation (such stress! ).

I also have to thank Nix for multiple references to my habits

While I am a little bit wiser now, I may still pull the trigger, if only to prove that SOG can build better tools than the PAD (even if not ideal viewed by LM or Vic standards). I have noted as main weaknesses the scissors and the file, plus the blade edge's tendency to dull by rolling easily.

To mitigate I'd probably prefer the V-cutter over the scissors, and fit a full PE blade instead of the part SE part PE one. The file, well, I could do the Wave file trick on that, I suppose. But let's see about that, the rounded SOG file might be so much better than the squared-end one as to be actually usable.

Does anyone have any insights to share before I pull the trigger?

I don't really have anything to share which you haven't already seen in my challenge, but personally I like the Powerlock The only thing I wasn't perfectly happy with is: the knife rolls from hitting the inside of the handle but can be avoided if you don't slam it in there. And the "hard" wire cutters feels a bit on the soft side, but for cutting electrical wire and softer solid wire it worls like a charm Hope this helps

S60 model with scissors. Leather sheath (but I swap out with a nylon from PowerAssist). I have had good luck with this tool. SOG in general. The one-handed flip opening worked first time and every time. In fact, I slightly tightened the screws to prevent knuckle-rap. Works a charm!

The 4" holder opens at right angle, AND the cover closes. I have seen a few models, maybe older ones, with covers too long to use the very hand right angle position.

though be careful putting PowerLocks and coins together, 
SOG used to advertise their Compound Leverage Patent by cutting coins in half with their PowerLocks at the knife shows

SOG PowerLock: Added thumb rest for close work


A small thing, but for me adding the opener to the open blade helps with diminishing thumb pad irritation. Since the serrations are, by my reckoning, backward, I don't have a straight blade edge down by the close end. No push-cuts. The added thumb rest just feels better when using the straight edge upper half. Better force and balance. I like smaller combination blades on multitools, but as Victorinox does it for many pocket knives (in the right place, and YES easy to sharpen). Straight blade close-in, for push-cuts. The SOG PowerLock isn't my go-to MT for bushcraft by any means, partly because of the blade. But I stumbled on the use of the open blade and opener together, as a work-around slight improvement. I use double or triple tool openings on my SwissTool Spirit for the large driver/pry bar, and on the SwissTool I back the chisel with the large driver/pry bar; the large driver and awl on the LM Surge for starting a number of screw and controlling depth.  Small useage techniques which add up to greater utility, for me at least.
