Is alox to be killed off eventually?
on: July 19, 2012, 07:34:59 PM
I didn't realize the only current 84/93 alox production models are the 84 cadets, and 93 pioneer (and soldier still I assume too) and farmer.   It's kind of sad there are no more ranchers, harvesters and anything with an electrician blade.

If they keep killing off models there wont be any left and that's just sad!

IMO, that would be a tragedy.  :(

The Alox models are absolutely fabulous.  In many ways, they haven't been marketed properly.  They're tough, yet very dressy, especially in the brightly colored scales.

Oh, and I think they still have the 58mm classic in alox too...

In 93 mm size there are more models currently available in NA besides the Pioneer: the Farmer (correct) and the Electrician. No Soldier. I am referring to standard Victorinox models, not limited runs, which are more diversified currently. And from Wenger the Standard Issue. Is not that bad as it may sound. Not yet  >:D

I must say I was not a fan of Alox SAK's at all, but after a while and a few posts from some members, I started to LOVE them!! Specially the marlin spike

I know I like the marlin spike too.  The other parts like an electricians blade I can hack from another blade, but making a marlin spike is a much tougher job.

At the Wenger store in Boulder earlier this year they told me the Standard Issue is being discontinued. Apparently the machinery to make the handles is worn out, and they don't sell enough to justify retooling. Something similar may be going on with Victorinox.

That's very sad!  Now I have to pick up some more of those too before the price goes up on me.

Me thinks Victorinox already did this with the alox Soldier scales a while ago ;)

I appreciate the toughness of the alox scales. They also have a more positive and safer grip than cellidor.

I wonder if eventually the cellidor will be replaced with a nylon mix, as in the '08 soldier

It seems inevitable at this point that the alox line will cease to be soon.

If Alox goes away, it will be an extremely sad day.  Not sure what my reaction would be. :(

As long as it is profitable I doubt the alox line will be stopped.
I would even say they may come out with even more, special edition, alox models.

Really stupid move.

And yes, they should market them better - they are a superb quality product.

I would definitely be rather miffed to say the least >:(

It's my favorite SAK to mod, so ya I'd be pretty sad.  It would hasten my move to make alox scales for 91's though for sure.

Agreed  :salute: I'm a big fan of the corkscrew, mini driver, and scale tools so 93mm alox forms a very small part of my gear.
Alox scales, plus scale tools, plus corkscrew, plus mini driver, plus 91mm tool options, plus inline awl ..

Slick!  I could do 6061 Al hardened anodize now, but they'd be smooth scale.  I think the alox key is the texture for grip and color wear.  The color on smooth scale I dont think would last long. and I'd think the grip would be pretty slick?  I'm still in saving mode for a mill, then I can do proper texture on the aluminum and get it hard anodized in pretty colors.

Now that it's mentioned, perhaps this is why, in the last couple years, we've seen a blizzard of alox limited editions in a rainbow of colors. Going out in a blaze of glory or something like that.....

Well it doesn't make sense to drop the entire line while there's still life in the rest of the tooling. Is this the same story as what happened to the 84mm scissors?

Ive never found hard (6061 or 7075) aluminum with a texture already, but if I did Id for sure try that.

IMHO the alox range are the best SAK's you can buy...sturdier tools, harder wearing scales and a good tool selection.
If you want toothpick & tweezers you can carry a classic or mini champ to compliment the alox.
I think they are perfect for us all in the UK and Victorinox really need to rethink discontinuing the alox range, with better marketing they could sell a lot here, the UKPK by Spyderco is very popular here but I would rather carry an alox SAK because it has more tools than just the single bladed UKPK...if they are willing to do limited runs of colored alox in 50 to 100 then why not continue the whole range of the silver alox

I think we should start a petition to keep the whole alox range ;)
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Maybe too textured, but worth a look (6061), can be thin too:

http://www.slipnot.com/products/floor-plate/aluminum/

Hmmm, the texture is for flooring so it may be too rough, but a bit of sanding might do the trick, or perhaps anonizing.  Does anonozing form it own surface (like oil paint) or conform to the surface (like acrylic paint).  I am sure there is a term for this, but I don't know what it is.

Cheers
