I have been wanting one for a while now and just want to get some thoughts from people with first hand experience. I know the H-1 steel is said to be a bit "soft" but that is not much of a issue for me. So any info would be greatly appreciated.

Pac salt is pretty big, pretty much a linerless endura. I have a fully serrated one that I keep on me for running, cycling and swimming in river/lake (well haven't had a chance for latter yet since I bought it). It's soaked in sweat pretty much every other day, and the most maintenance I've done is to wipe it dry occasionally. It's as shiny as the day I bought it, really is rust proof. Very light too, so works well with light clothing.

I wanted a spyderco salt 1 for ages now but never found on for a price I could afford and in decent enough condition. I will find one some day.

I do have a Ladybug Salt and can echo what jzmtl said about it being rust proof. Not even a dot.

There is a series of tests done on H1 steel by cutlerylover over on youtube, he even left it in bleach for some time and nothing.

I would not be surprised if it replaces my other Spydies.

Threads like this get me thinking

I need a totally rust proof knife.

I'm undecided between the Atlantic and tasmin salt.

From what I've read On a spyder like forum. H1 gets harder as it's worked and is a great steel for serrated knives getting harder than zdp189 .

I got to try it to see for myself.

My two Pac Salts. Both have FFG by Tom Krein. Some do not like H1 as it doesnt hold an edge like some steels. But it resharpens easily which is more inportant to me than super duper edge holding ability. Dont get me wrong I really like some of the so called super steels but they are not the only game in town. I'm really quite fond of CTS-XHP and M390

I honestly do not use some knives or tools just out of fear of rust. I have always wanted a "real" knife that will not rust under any conditions. I can't wait to get it.

I agree completely. While I will admit that many harder super steels have their place, I generally prefer something that is easier to maintain.

Plus, given my recent rust issues, I am a bit more motivated to try one of these.

Cap I can assure you that H1 will not rust. Those two knives have worked in very wet harsh conditions for a knife blade. Congrats on the black Pac Salt I`m sure it will serve you well.

I have a yellow PE version that saw two years of continuous carry, before I went full-bore into slipjoints. Here are my thoughts:

At 3 oz, it is ridiculously light for its size. Its ergos are great, both handle and blade; it feels safe to choke up on the blade, and it uses the Endura 3 platform, if memory serves. It has not rusted in two years of sweat, water immersion, and general use, and will not because every bit and bob is FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon...re: plastic), Ti, or H1.

H1 gets tougher with use, and I believe it. That said, I smurfed the angle when I first sharpened it, and it can be difficult to sharpen as time goes on, as the H1 gets harder. Granted, I was more of a sharpening novice then, and haven't attempted it again.

It's a great knife, and mine holds a special place in my heart, even though my cutlery tastes have changed. I also have a H1 Ladybug, Salt 1, Tasman (all yellow), and a black Saver Salt. I really like the concept of rust free knives.

Caveat emptor, if you get an early production Salt knife, the etched H1 may "bleed" a little rust. This isn't the H1, but leftover ferrous particulate matter from the laser etching process. Don't think this will be an issue on the black bladed PacSalts, since they are more recent.

Hehe sorry. It really is one of my favorite one handers, behind only my "sheepsfoot" BM mini grip. I bring it hiking as a general purpose backup knife. You can hardly tell it is there when clipped to a cargo pocket. It has been snorkeling in Maui, to the top of both Half Dome and Mount Baldy, a good portion of the Malibu Backbone Trail, and dozens of other small day hikes. You won't regret the purchase.

FYI you will not work harden H1 with sharpmaker or any other manual sharpening device, this has been debunked a while ago but still circulates.

There's a thread on spyderco forum right now and I'll borrow a paragraph from there:

"Work hardening can only take place under loads which are actually high enough to supply large amounts of energy to the steel. This compression forces internal strains to such a level that the steel actually both deforms (you get an increase in dislocations, etc.) and there are changes in the crystal structure (the high compression supplies the necessary energy). The heat and forces generated through mechanical grinding are going to be far in excess of what you can generate with the Sharpmaker."

I finally received the Pacific Salt and from the first day of carry I have to say I am very impressed. It is light as a feather and is almost unnoticeable in my pocket. I have to say I was a bit worried about the blade locking up tight as there are no liners to support it. I was pleasantly surprised to find it locked up tight with no wobble in any direction. I honestly cannot find a thing I do not like about it so far. I will give a more formal write up once I use the knife for a few weeks and get a real feel for it. for now I give it a A+

That's pretty well the same as I have heard from pretty well everyone- it's a good knife but no one really seems to rave about it.
