Anyone ever mod or take apart PS4 with rivets?
on: January 22, 2013, 10:27:18 PM
Bought a PS4 fairly cheap.  Wanting to take it apart.  Anyone ever mod one of these and put it back together?  Just curious what I might get myself into.

Thanks

The ones with torx screw pivots are easy. The riveted ones can supposedly be modded by cutting off the rivet heads, popping them out, and replacing with pivots from knifekits.com

Lots have been modded.

check out my Splash project.

Exactly what you are taking about. I can do a reassembly photo post when I reassemble.

I will keep track of that.

My project is probably going to be a disaster in the making.  It will be the cheapest couple of hours of entertainment though.

May I ask what you use to cut the pivots down?

Any chance to learn is a good chance.

I used a small hack saw to cut them down but if you mean the the rivets on the tool itself. I went a little more more aggressive than I should of in retrospect.

You'll need to clamp the tool down in drill press mountable vice, then use a carbide bit (ideally 1/8) and slowly auger out the rivet head till its gone. You should be able to tap it and free the tools.

Keep in mind where the spacers and washers are. The super thick ones go opposite the blades, the super thin ones sandwich the file exclusively and the medium one is coupled with the figure 8 lanyard ring.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for the help.  I now have my first disassembled PS4.  Now the trick will be reassembly.  Wasn't paying attention to what goes where but should be too hard to figure it out.

OH! I took some photos and assembly tips on my Splash thread. I am going to see if I can dig it up.

EDIT!:

Here are some assembly pics and tricks if you ever decide to assemble a Squirt.

Have all your assemblies near by, thread the outside tools into place and get the plier head/spring cam ready.

Now, pay attention to which way the back spring frame goes. The back spring rest should be farther away from the plier pivot.

Here's the biggest tip, align and thread the PLIER and CAM FIRST before you install the back springs. With any tension from the springs, it's much easier.

(Image removed from quote.)

Now slide the back springs into place, you will need to back off the pin so you can slide both springs in at once. One they are lined up, use a pair of pliers to squeeze the back spring up towards the spine, while at the same time tap the whole assembly so that the pin can slide into the hook of the spring. One at a time or both.
Best to have a block of wood or something hard and non marring to tap the pin in while holding the pliers.

All the way through

Continue sandwiching the parts. If you are building a standard squirt, this should be your outside layer.

That's pretty much it!
