Wenger Rangers 73 and 75
on: February 24, 2008, 07:56:42 PM
I've got the urge to get a SAK/pliers hybrid for a while, but a good review (and some good pics) might get me to drop the money for one.  Has anyone handled one?  How thick are they when closed?

I'm surprised no one EDCs something like these, (well, not that I've heard of).

This one looks too busy for me...:

This style looks interesting to...I know Aitor and Mil-Tec make this kind of "army issue" knife:

I have the 75 model and it is a great thing to have! The blade is really sharp and IMO the pliers work as well as those found on the Juice line! I also have the same thing w/ scissors! I think that they are the best found on any SAK!

Do the folding pliers make the tool really thick?  Is it something you could pocket carry or is it more of a sheath tool?

Here's what Def wrote up about the Alinghi on SOSAK http://www.sosakonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=232&Itemid=35

I am hoping to get one at some point.
I'm back!!

Thanks for the link (and the review Def)!

I should check SOSAK more often...

I didn't know you could get a GAK look-alike with pliers.  That is interesting.

I'm on the verge of ordering a 73 from Tim.  I like the little hawkbill blade, and I always carry a canopener anyway.

Same here, it looks really useful.

I'm trying to think of why I would carry this and not a full size multi though

I'm intrigued by the design though

No problem on the review... it's kinda my thing! :P

The Alinghi and other Ranger models with the pliers are really neat- I have a 73 on the way also, unless Tim forgets again!  :pok:

In my opinion, the Alinghi would make a perfect woods knife if they substituted the marlin spike for a wood saw, but I don't think a woods knife was what Wenger had in mind when making a knife for a world class sailing team!

As for the pliers themselves, and their worthiness, I really like them.  The plier head itself is about the size of the Juice models, but the larger handles allow for greater leverage and comfort during use.  Plus, the end of the handle sticks out a small amount when folded, allowing the Alinghi to be opened one handed:

Aside from the second hand keychain Wenger classic I got years ago, this Ranger will be my "first" proper Wenger knife.

While I sell them, I also EDC the Rangers, preferring  the 73. The pliers are compact yet quite effective and I agree that I like the HawkBill blade. I carry the full line of Rangers including the 73 and 75.
