Dork Alert!
on: August 12, 2012, 12:23:23 AM
My wife and I, and some friends went to the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History today, which has a not so naturally historic exhibit featuring costumes from sci fi movies.  It's Called "Out Of This World- Extraordinary Costumes From Film & TV."  While not much in the way of natural history, it was fun nonetheless.  All of these costumes are supposed to be authentic.

Here's my wife at the entrance:

The lighting kind of sucked and we weren't allowed to use flash photography, so this is the best I could get.

Indiana Jones' jacket:

1960's era Robin, as worn by Burt Ward:

George Clooney Batman, complete with molded nipples  ::) :

Arnold's jacket from the original Terminator:

Connor McLeod's armor from Highlander:

The original Darth Vader:

Elder program from TRON:

Engineer's coveralls from Start Trek: The Motion Picture:

Alec Guiness' Obi-Wan Kenobi robe:

Captain Kirk's evening wear:

The original Gorn costume:

Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine costume:

Generic Klingon costume:

Patrick Stewart's uniform from the Next Generation Star Trek:

Ray Stantz (Dan Akroyd) from Ghostbusters 2:

Rebel Pilot from The Empire Strikes Back:

T'Pal's (Jolene Blalock) costume from Star Trek Enterpise:

Imperial Officer's uniform:

Luke Skywalker's lightsaber from the first and second Star Wars films, and his hand from the second:

Stormtrooper helmet and gun:

Collections of toys and memorabilia:

While there we also saw some of the natural history stuff too.  Most of it was local things- early settler tools, local native pottery, local animals and so on.  There was also this guy, and I had to get my wife to stand next to him because I figured no one would believe the size of it without a reference.

There were also some local sharks (not live) in another display:

And there were some astronomical displays too:

This is a giant ball just in a small theater inside the entrance and they project images onto it so it changes from one planet to another while an automated voice tells you about it and small information screens flash up facts.  Here you can see it's talking about Jupiter.

It was a lot of fun, and also kind of amusing to see that people in Hollywood must be really really tiny.  The George Clooney Batman costume was only slightly taller than me (I'm 5 ft 10 in) if you count in the ears and that it was standing on a podium.  The Jeri Ryan costume barely came up to my mid chest, which would put the top of her head somewhere around my chin!   :ahhh

Darth Vader though was HUGE, and even bigger since he was standing on a podium, proving once again that the power of this battle station pales in comparison to that of the Force...

Actually, it was her and her friend that decided we should go do this.  I hadn't even heard of it.  :P

Very cool stuff indeed.  I like visiting places like that.  Most recently, my wife and some friends visited a Wax Museam and it was awesome.  :tu:

Those two pictures of your wife captured a nice effect: on the first she's like "oh well, let's go" and then on the second she looks to having a good time.  :tu:

I've always wanted to see it- an old girlfriend of mine's father worked at that museum for 25 years and it's one of those things I always meant to go see. Last year they had a tyrannosaur skull that I really wanted to see as well but was never able to make time to see.

Those two pictures of your wife captured a nice effect: on the first she's like "oh well, let's go" and then on the second she looks to having a good time.  :tu:

She actually enjoyed the whole trip- the disgust in the first photo was at having her picture taken!

I really should try to make it down to that before it's gone.  Looks like a lot of cool stuff there.  We went last year when the T-Rex was there, and that was quite the thing to see.
