Leatherman Core Value?
on: August 10, 2012, 05:02:16 AM
I'm trying to find out how much my Core is worth. See below for details.

The Tool:
It's new. I bought it new a few years ago and never used it. The main blade has been stropped on a leather belt, but never sharpened. The tool has never been used, carried, or modified in any way. No damage, scratches, dings, rust, or other nasties. The date stamp on the inside of the handles is 0508 (May 2008).

The Sheath:
New. I have two never-used sheaths, and one of them goes to the Core. The first one is black nylon, sewn all the way around. No hole in the bottom. Velcro fastener. The black-and-yellow Leatherman logo is embroidered on a patch, which is sewn to the front flap.
The second sheath is the same, except it has the white-and-red Leatherman logo on the patch. Both sheaths are still new and flat; I put the Core in identical used sheaths and it fits them both.

What you see above (the tool and sheath) is what I have. No box, packaging, warranty card, receipt, or paperwork. What would this be worth?
This is gonna hurt...

I think the first thing to consider is the selling price of the tool that replaced the Core.  a quick search shows me that I can get an ST300 for about $55 from amazon.  (looks like you're in the US, so you should be able to do the same.)

that being said, the Core is no longer readily available, so it will have some value to collectors in search of a retired tool, but not as much as a rarer, harder-to-find tool.

What you see above (the tool and sheath) is what I have. No box, packaging, warranty card, receipt, or paperwork. What would this be worth?

just FYI -- Leatherman does not require any receipt or other proof of purchase for warranty work.  their warranty coverage is top notch, and it's of the "no questions asked" variety.

with that in mind, I'd say your like-new Core is worth around $40... but that's just one man's semi-educated guess.  ;)

Ebay is the place to get a rough guide of your Core's Value. I have seen new ones go for about $50 to $65 usd with sheath  :tu:

I only mention the lack of box, packaging, paperwork, etc. for a complete portrayal of what I have. The Core I have is stainless, not black oxide. Which would be the proper sheath for my 2008 Core?
