Tensile strength of Style CS driver?
on: August 12, 2012, 05:32:37 PM
Hi all,

Leatherman's keychain offerings are some of my favorite MT's, particularly those based on a scissor platform. Love my Style CS, but I am not certain how much torque its driver can take. I like the fact its shank is so long, but am afraid it will deform if twisted too hard, or even break, given that one side is mounted into plastic. It seems flimsy. Does anyone have experience on how much twistin they CS can withstand, compared to the Micra and/or Vic Classic? Both of those have served me well for ad hoc repairs, but sometimes a longer shank flat Phillips s necessary.

Thanks!

Keith

P.S. LM, how about an all-steel Style CS? No mor plastic!

Hi, I have the Style CS, but I haven't really taken the screwdriver to the limits. I bet it will bent/break. I've howerver used the Micra's flat-head screwdriver on rrrrrrrrreally tough things and it's one strong little hero :D

My biggest problem with drivers seems to be stripping them.  In all my experiences, I've stripped the driver until it does nothing except slipping in the screw before anything else.

Usually it's the hardware that strips first because the screw is engineered to be softer than the tool, but I've had some rare situations where it's the tool that goes first.

If you are going to use a lot of force hold it from closer to the tip so that the shaft will not get a chance to twist and break.

Thank you for the replies. That's actually what I do with my classic; hold it by the shank. The SD tip makes for a marvelous 2D Phillips.

While I trust the Micra drivers more, I'll try my luck with the CS and report back.
