Red Sea underwater pictures
on: September 09, 2012, 06:59:16 PM
I thought these deserved their own topic, rather than just being posted in my other underwater pics thread. Took them a few days ago; mainly shooting video though.

I will post a few and put a link to a quick selection  album for anybody wanting more  :P .

...... in progress..

I feel a bit ripped off- there's hardly any red stuff in that sea!

Great shots otherwise though! There's not much that interesting around here.

Usually I swim in the Mediterranean, so the fish looked weird to me too.
I saw some really strange fish, box shaped, whale shaped, looking like animals etc. The lionfish were my favourite.
What was surprising about the Red Sea (apart from being a deep blue colour) was that it was warm in the morning too, whereas I am used to the sea being noticeably colder in the morning and the fact that it tasted less salty than the Mediterranean, as it is expected since it is an open sea compared to the closed Mediterranean sea.
The fish are quite tame as they are not hunted and even large, tasty looking, specimens will come quite close to you. If you move away from the reef you will also see other much bigger fish, but with the usual boring silver colours. The corals were also quite colourful and pleasant to look at.

The visibility was very good, especially in spots where there were no waves and the sandy sea bed was at a large depth. Best times, as always, early morning or late afternoon.

You have some fantastic shots there!!!  :tu:  I'd love to get an underwater camera, but since I don't swim past where I can touch, it might not really be worth it for me.   That, and as Def said, about all we'd capture is floaty bits in the harbour  :td:

In most of the good places, right after the coral reef the water becomes quite deep, dropping down to 6+ metres in depth, so if you are not used to it, it can be quite unsettling as you may feel you are jumping of a cliff (think of looking down from the 2nd floor of a house); especially if it is getting dark and you are alone.

It is however fun to dive all the way down and have someone take pictures of you, or see how deep you can go; getting a “high” from the dive, the depth. You feel quite euphoric after a few deep, long dives.

Here is a picture of the main port, where most boats leave from, at the end of the day. There are quite a few boats there, used to take people to the reefs, though you can drive to most of them too.

Very little of the snorkeling I do is more than 15-20 feet of water, and most is between 6-10 feet. Any more than 10-12 feet and you really can't see anything, and any less than 4 feet is really too close to see much.

In the Red Sea the water is cristal clear and you perfectly see and even can take pictures at 60 feet, I mean without strobe on high iso setting.

What equipment do you use for underwater photography?
