Street legal Glass Breakers?
on: September 11, 2012, 10:14:35 PM
I was looking at getting a ResQMe for edc, but was wondering if there were any good, worthwhile alternatives? :)

Obviously it's got to be sturdy and reliable, as well as street legal in the UK, but beyond that I'm open to suggestions please? :)

I'd go with the resqme, but other choises are Benchmade Houdini pro or just a spring loaded centre punch maybe. Or even a plain old spark plug ;)

There are two versions of it:

PRO:
http://www.benchmade.com/products/30200

and Keychain:
http://www.benchmade.com/products/30100

Are you planing to keychain, bag or car carry it? I have a resqme mounted on my gear shift with a mechanics ring.

I prefer the Res-Q-Me to the Houdini as it's a less bulky package.  That having been said, I've never had to extricate myself or anyone else from a wrecked car or plane crash with either so I really can't comment on the effectiveness of either.

Remember that a lot of these designs date from before they started putting tempered glass into the side windows, so I'm not sure how effective they are.

But I also have a hatchet and a fire extinguisher right under the rear window in my little truck, and if I'm wearing more than underwear I have a knife on me, so....

The resQme does still appeal more as it'll be carried in a variety of ways :)

Does anyone know if it'll work on tempered glass then ???

Look for the Rescue Tool of Victorinox:

It's perfect but it's not suitable for carrying with you.
Only to have it in your car. ;)

I think benchmade makes one of those rescue hooks with a carbide glass breaker on the back, not 100% sure it's them but definitely seen it before. Also Boker makes a Ti pry bar with glass breaker.

I have a couple of res-q-mes, while they are fine for keeping in cars or on your car keys, I certainly don't want one on my daily keychain.

 :pok: Check this out too:

I have the locking versions of these SRM family members (the Ts' ) and they are pretty solid knives.  :tu:

I am not sure about the blade length legality, but it has a glass breaker, strap cutter, can opener; multitoolish and cheap.

They started using tempered glass on the side windows of cars in the 1950s... so its a pretty safe bet that all modern cars have tempered glass side windows, and laminated glass front windshields.

It would be very difficult for the Crown to build a case for these being dangerous weapons.

While a case could be made for these being fixed blades, there is really no possible way to injure or threaten folks like this.

I wish stupidity was limited to your government....

At any rate, this would be one of those issues where I would carry it then if I got into trouble for it I'd have a grand old time with the media and then in court....

Well that's kind of silly.  I mean does a pair of scissors count as a fixed blade?  Or maybe 2 fixed blades? Or a flick knife?

There is barely more cutting surface on rescue tool than small pen knife anyhow.

Keeping it in the car adds more credence to the theory that it's not a weapon....

"Hey mate, give me your wallet or wait a few minutes while I run to my car, then when I get back hold still for a bit while I cut your clothes off...."

I'd probably phrase it exactly that way when brought before a judge too...
