Standard Tool Adaptor vs Universal Tool Adaptor
on: September 13, 2012, 04:40:12 PM
Can anyone clarify the difference between the two please? I have the Standard which works on the older LM tools, but the only tool I have which accepts this properly is a PST II ... and following the disappearance on my PT-510 hybrid, it's days may be numbered

Ideally I'd like a pic of both side by side if possible so I can see if one can be tweaked to become the other - in other words - if there's more to it than just the lump on one side and the tab on the other  ;)

The Standard also has those dimples that can get in the way with newer tools. Here's a pic courtesy of our own Dave.

Yup, there is more to it.

The lump and tab will break off before bending back. And once you grind off the two bumps it will fit, just not very well, too much play from the open sided slot. Even if you extend the slot it isn't much better. Ok for use with my surge w/st3 head, borderline with the st3 w/surge head, no good with core, st2, charge etc.

IMO save the time and effort and buy the universal version if you think you'll use it.

Perfect excuse to pick up the st2 though, they make for great users. :pok: ;)  :)  :D

Actually while it is loose fitting on the charge, in use it is fine. On the core and st2 the handles meet before there is enough pressure on the adapter, I find it tends to move around as you change grips. Would taking a pic of my adapted one be of any help?

That's be good, cheers  :tu: It seems like tracking down one of the Universals might be a better way forward for me though from what you've said. I have used the Standard on "other" tools and it did the job, but the handles were slightly splayed which made it that bit more awkward than it needs to be  :)

The splaying is there with the UTA too. I don't have a Standard to compare, so here are some shots of the UTA in various mts.

Perfect  :tu: That's a great reference tool for me mate, thank you  :salute:

I'll have a play with some of tools I have (MP700, Spirit, Swisstool, Charge) in conjunction with the STA and see how it compares

Thanks again

Excellent, thanks Zoidberg ... so they're all with a modified and unmodified STA, is that right?

Yes, modified on the left and standard on the right.

I'm still hunting for a uta myself. :) It is more of a want than a need thing, as I generally carry multiple bit driver ratchets / handles with me anyway. ;)

Cheers mate  :tu: For me it's a matter of determining whether to keep it and modify it as an add on option, or whether to just let it go. I don't think I "need" to track down a UTA, though of course having one would be nice  ;) it's more to determine the future of the one I have (mod/sell/keep)

I bought it for a Pulse (which didn't work out for me) and PST II (which might be being butchered soon), and with me not planning to introduce any other Ye Olde LM in my carry options, it's unlikely I'll keep it. I'm not certain if the butchered PST II will be riding in a PST II chassis or something else yet

... of course it's all just speculation at this stage ...  :P

I'll studdy all those pics over the weekend. Thanks again guys

In the 90 degree position , it's not a bad pocket/palm driver all by itself . Usefull piece of kit .

Quick update. The slot on the uta is slightly narrower, it is possible to wedge approx half of it onto the st2 but I don't think it is meant to go on.

I very much agree. Sure is great for getting into confined spaces. Fixed a footstool recently that neither the charge ti or stubby ratchet could fit.

Have a UTA here, haven't used it in a while. Bit awkward to EDC.
