CE Lovers Only

Warning, this page is for CE lovers only. If you are a PE person, this may irritate you or possibly piss you off, read on with caution.
I ordered a Benchmade 940 from my local knife shop the other day. I have been wanting this knife for a long time. The green handle, reverse Tanto blade, S30V steel, and the amazingly smooth open & close action with the AXIS lock have drawn me to it since the day I discovered it.
Until yesterday, I thought it only came with a PE blade in the reverse tanto shape, and the CE was the clip point blade which took away much of the look and awe of the knife for me.
I was talking to the knife shop owner, and they do make the blade shape I want in CE, but the order had shipped already from BM. However, the knife shop can place their own serrations on any blade, any where you want! I've seen their work, it is top notch, and I am not afraid of them damaging the knife blade. My question is, if you could have a PE blade professionally semi-serrated, where would you do it? Would you do it traditionally on the base of the blade? Or on the base of the blade, but more serrations than PE? Or would you put serrations on the tip? This is an expensive knife for me, The closest I've come to spending on something like this is the Charge TTi, but it's easier to justify when you are getting 17 other tools :-)
I really like combo edges, but I don't want to ruin an almost $200 knife either. I know PE will suit my needs fine also. But, if you wanted to do it, where would you put the serrations?

Just a thought, BM may stiff you on warranty if you add aftermarket serrations. I've been stiffed by Wenger for doing the same thing, even though the parts needing warranty has absolutely nothing to do with the serration added.

Good point, I will have to really consider that. Thank you!

I'm not really a CE lover ... but I think you need to do what works best for you. Personally I like a plain edge at the base for sharpening pencils etc, and a plain edge tip for detail work. If I felt the need to have a CE blade and had the control of how and where, it would probably be central along the length keeping boths ends PE. Thinking about it, I think this may be why I'm not a CE lover as a CE invariably means I have to lose one of the two functions I want from a knife.
All that said, your money - your choice. What tasks do you need/want serrations for, and when do you prefer a PE section?

Most of my cuts at work are zipties (big ones) and rope or twine, and I've just grown accustomed to using the serrated part of the blade for those cuts. Today I had to cut the tip off a silicone tube with my Leatherman e55bx. The serrated base worked great for cutting into the material, and the plain edge finished off the cut.

PE lover here and why the hell are you wanting to ruin a 940.
Also could the shop send it back for an exchange?

Well, I got the 940 today. I am in love! This is the knife I have wanted for a long time, not sure what I am going to do with the drawer-full I already have. I have confirmed that the serrations being added by the shop do not affect the warranty, as they have an agreement with Benchmade to cut the same style of serrations into the blade if they do it.
I don't know if I am going to do that yet or not, I really like the knife, and I think in 99% of situations, I will have a serrated blade handy via tool bag, house, etc. So time will tell. Over all, a great knife. If you are thinking about getting one, do it, you won't regret owning this!
