They are all now laser etched with Leatherman but they maintain their PocketTool X tool name.

Welcome Leatherman Piranha!

I think $30 is too much for a steel one piece tool. I mean, a Wingman costs less than that! I could understand if it were made of something like titanium.

BTW, does anyone know out of what kind of steel they are making the Piranha? Just says "stainless steel" on the Leatherman site.

The Piranha started out in S30V for one brief run, then changed to 154CM, and is currently now 440C, I believe.

[Edit:  It might actually be 420HC, not 440C.]

I thought that at first, but the "downgrade" of steel actually makes the wrenches more usable; while S30V and 154CM make good blades, they apparently aren't quite as good as the "lesser" steels in terms of functionality.  I do miss the other, now-discontinued PTX tools, though. :/

I Have a SS and a BO (smoke) 440 steel ones and they are awesome. I kind of wish some of the inside corners were sharper.

I hadn't thought of that. Good point. However, I still think $30 is too much for a one piece tool.

I guess you've not yet seen some of the prices of Atwood tools, then. ;)

I have, :o and I won't be purchasing any Atwoods anytime soon. They look pretty cool though.

It's not just Atwoods that cost a lot.  Robot Tools were (if I recall) about $67, the Flud P38.5 I think cost me $60.  There are some others in that neighborhood as well, which is what makes the $20 Raker Ring Tool and $30 Piranha excellent bargains.  TBH, I am not terribly impressed with the Robot Tool although I never handled it, and the P38.5 I have is virtually useless.  It mangles the crap out of cans and you'll die of thirst before managing to open a bottle with it, and titanium is a really crappy metal for the screwdriver ends.... but then I suppose no one is actually expected to use these things.   ::)

I'll keep my sub $5 Navy tool thank you very much.

I'm glad that Leatherman made the move. I can't wait until the LM branded Brewzer's hit the market. As much as I hat to say it, Atwoods are getting really expensive. I'm carrying a smoke Brewzer right now and I love it. I just hope that LM doesn't jack up the price on the Brewzer's...

As I understand it (I could be wrong) Leatherman is not planning to change the lineup any, other than to put their name on them.  Leatherman is smart enough to know that when you buy an existing company you are paying for their expertise.  Changing things up is a sure way to kill off the product you just paid through the nose for.  This includes prices, and if anything, Thanks to Leatherman's existing distribution network, this should really only make the tools cheaper not more expensive.

I hope that's the only thing that changes. :-\ The Piranha, as shown on the LM page, seems made of a different material than both of the PTX ones I own... and the fact that it is listed as "stainless steel", without any further info on the alloy, rings all the wrong bells in my head...

Knife Center shows them in stock for $9.95 right now. A few have come and gone on Ebay as well.

Does anyone know when Leatherman's version of the Piranha is actually going to be available to hold in our hands?  I hesitated too long before ordering the Limited edition Ti Piranha from PocketToolX and missed out.  Now I'll settle for a standard version.  Come on Leatherman!!!
