I'm after a new bike.
on: March 01, 2008, 10:15:46 PM
Hi guy's, I've been looking into getting a new bike, preferably a utility type bike, with the ability to carry a lot of gear and some out sized loads, and my son too :)

I've found a couple that really interest me, and also represent what I'm really looking for...

http://www.yubaride.com/

http://www.konabikes.co.uk/2008/ute/ute.php

http://www.xtracycle.com/sub.php

I was originally looking into getting a tandem, or a trailer bike, but I think this style of bike would be best for someone like me :)

Money (as ever) is at a bit of a premium, so please no links to hyper exotic bikes :D, but I'd be interested in any idea's or sugestions (I will be looking over on bikeforums.com too) you guys might have, as I trust your judgement :)

Those are a great idea--I've never seen a 'ute' style bike but I am sort of "out of the loop".

The Yuba looks to have a very stout frame.  I wonder what the weight differences are with these bikes.

Well the yuba is all steel, and is made for African roads so it'll be bloody heavy :D, although bizarly they only put a 2 year warente on the frame ???, but then it's comparitively cheap :)

The Ute looks very slick, but then it's a good deal more expensive ::)

Yes, the Kona looks very well appointed.

I wouldn't mind getting a bike if I lived somewhere flat. And if I wasn't so clumsy. And I was in better shape. And not so lazy.  :D

This is absolutely relevant to the forum topic of multitools.

Looking at the Yubaride site, I'm worried they have "modern features" such as "brakes" and "pedals"

Admittedly, I have owned and ridden bikes without brakes or pedals, but I wouldn't like them be "optional extras" on a new purchase.

The brit sellers have all that stuff fitted, brakes are kinda important if you'd seen the way I ride :D

"Sport Utility Bike" ?

I'm going to hope there's irony there or something, making fun of themselves or the like, otherwise my "Wee-woo-wee-woo-bullsmurf" siren will have to be applied.

(Okay, they also say "sport utility picnic" so they are being funny, all good)

Hmm, I could go a nice set of panniers for my bike...

I'd be willing to kill a man, maybe five or six men, and a child, for some Australia Post panniers to go with my CT110.

"Hardtail" - When did not having rear suspension become a feature?

I prefere hardtail bikes, I like my bikes simple and reliable, having a rear shock just adds weight and complication.

Personally I'd go for the Kona, there's a dealer fairly nearby. That could well be be the deciding factor for you, who's your nearest dealer, and are they reliable. On a side note,it's going to be sunny and 60 F here today, and I'm going riding!
 BTW,hub or derailleur? :D

Ha ha :D

My heart wants the Kona, but it really is a fair bit out of my price range, I can't believe the stuck a derailleur on a utility/cargo bike ::), seems a bit stupid to me.

I'm not looking long and heard at some Dutch roadsters too :), bloody heavy, but should be good for the sort of loads/distances I have in mind :)

It was terrific being out again!  I managed 11 miles.A little tiring on legs that hadn't been on the road in a couple months;trainers are fine, but it just isn't the same as having pavement under your wheels and wind in your face.Today is supposed to be even better, around 70 or so,I'm going to aim for a pair of 10 mile rides, and that may be the last for a week or so,winter is going to get one last dig in on us from tomorrow on.

Enjoy the 70 degree weather today Bison.  We had that yesterday, and I was out cleaning up all the mess from the previous ice storm.  It was really a nice break.  Now the next ice/snow storm is moving in.  ::)

I now go mountain biking only sometimes during weekends. Unlike before that I go biking one hour daily during weekdays and the whole morning during weekends. I still have my mountain bike that I assembled from components I meticulously selected.

Micky, I sugest that you assemble your own bike. That way you have the option to select the individual components.

These are my bike’s components:
Shimano Alivio for shifters, rear delraileur, bottom bracket, front and rear hubs, front and rear brakes, sprockets, pinions and all cables.
Suntour XC Pro for front derailleur.
Frame is Chrome-Molybdenum.
