How do you guys clean lint and pocket gunk out?
on: March 07, 2008, 06:38:50 AM
The question is in the title.

I just got a Victorinox SwissTool and would like to straight carry it in my pocket. But my jeans always get my knives and stuff all full of lint and it mixes with the oil and turns all bad in the tool.

If I do carry the tool in my pocket, how can I get that nasty stuff out?

Compressed air!

Upen all the impliments and blast away.

I woulden't put any lubricant on the tool since that acts as a "glue" gor dust and lint.  The Swisstool operates smoothyl anyways so no lube is really needed (on myne anyways).

Toothbrush, hot water and dish soap.

Mix all three, scrub for a minute or so while opening/closing the tools and working the locks. Then towel dry and place in front of the heater/fan to dry all the nooks.

Use less oil or find a different brand if the oil is mixing with pocket debris and creating issues. I have found that regular ol' 10W-40 motor oil dropped in the pivots works for me better than anything else I've tried.

Toothpicks and pipe cleaners can also help get in and clean out those hard to reach places.   ;)

Why don't you try stopping the gunk getting in there in the first place with one of these http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,3716.0.html

Once you use the compressed air and such that others have recommended, you might think about getting yourself some Mucillin. (Or mucilin?) Regardless of how it's spelled, it's a silicon gel/powder that fishermen use to keep their line on top of the water and lessen the effect of water tension. Any flyfishing or better sporting goods store will have it for less than a fiver. I haven't tried it, but being silicon and specifically designed to keep whatever it covers from whatever touches that, I imagine it would be good at repelling lint. The tiny jars even contain a felt cloth you can rub on your tool. I mean the multitool.

My vest is too far away for me to check the spelling on the name...sorry.

I take my car every saturday to the car wash after my shooting range weekly session, the owner knows me he let me uses his air compressor and I make sure to clean all that I need to clean with compressed air, is an industrial compressor so it cleans very good, last Saturday I cleaned my Sideclip and my Swisstool in a few seconds.

I run them through the dishwasher!  It sounds silly, but it works, and the water is usually hot enough that no water pools in the nooks and crannies.

I cleaned my Gerber after every Gulf coast fishing trip with a sonic ring cleaner. You can find them in jewelery stores or walmart. Clean your wedding ring and your wave at the same time. Comes out shiny too.
