Thinking about getting a Gerber

I've been pretty Leatherman loyal, but I've been checking out the different Gerber models too. The only 2 that have really caught my attention are the Resolve and the Legend 800, but I wanna know what everyone else thinks.

What would be a good starting out Gerber?
E.G. if someone asked my opinion about a first Leatherman, I'd suggest the Wave.

I can vouch for the MP 600 series. My favorite is the variant that has a RemGrit replaceable saw...it cuts through ANYTHING. You can also put in small jigsaw type blades. There's also a bit kit that fits on all of the 600 series...a coupler attaches to the Phillips bit, and from that you can use any standard hex bit.

The Diesel is a very good model, and perhaps you could consider a new Flik too

The Flik does look good, no file on it though which is an important tool to me.

If you are interested in a Gerber 800 Roadie has one in good condition in the for sale section that might be worth looking at.

Any of the MP series (400/600/700/800) are worth a good look, they are well made with some cool features on, the flick out pliers are great, the only thing people tend not to like is the rattle but it doesn't stop them being great! I can't say anything about the new breed of tools that are based on the flick out pliers but from reading reviews from people who have them, they are solid tools just like the originals.

Alright, I'm looking into getting a Flik. But all the sites I've checked out (Gerber-tools.com, EDCdepot, ebay) Don't have any! Any suggestions?

I don't see them listed on the site yet, so contact Dennis at sales@gerber-tools.com for pricing information. He says they just arrived today, so he likely hasn't yet had a chance to put them up.

Sounds like you've already ruled out the Resolve. Probably best you avoid it altogether, IMO. It's simply not in the same class as the other models that have been mentioned.

The resolve still looks pretty cool to me. But its pretty basic. I like the fliks one handed opening and outside accsessible tools. But if I get hardcore into gerber, ill probably end up getting one eventually. Right now I`m looking for a good starter

I would agree with Bob (J-Sews) statement about the Resolve. If you want an accurate sample of Gerber tools I'd avoid the Resolve, Crux, Suspension, Evo, Ripstop, Tread and a few others. These are all ultra cheap tools designed to get the Gerber name into Wal Mart and compete with other super cheap crappy tools. While they may be a small step above the no name tools, I still wouldn't suggest anyone spends actual money on them. Gerber has a number of good tools available, and if you want to give them a legitimate shot, I'd suggest the higher end tools would be a much better start.

Look for the Multiplier series (400, 600, 650 (discontinued), 700 (discontinued) or 800), the Diesel, Freehand or Flik.

Both look very good and I am sure will serve you well.

Like the guys have said, stay away from the Resolve and Suspension models etc as these seem to let the brand down a little. If you want to know why just ask Hawkchucker.

For the $17 that HawkChucker spent on the Suspension, I'd consider many of these cheapos a little more worthwhile, but not at the $40+ price point they seem to go at in most places. While I think that Hawk's experiences were isolated, perhaps part of a bad batch, it's still hard to part with a significant amount of money for it.

I paid $25 for a Gerber set that included a Clutch, Resolve and Foreman flashlight, and I'm glad I didn't pay any more.

Well I checked out walmart at their tools. All they had were supensions and diesels. Neither caught my interest. I like that the suspension has outside accsessing tools, but I've read the horror stories from you guys. The diesel just really isn't my thing

Yeah, despite being made in China, the Flik isn't bad at all. In fact, it is pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised by it, and I'd feel comfortable recommending it to just about anyone.

Seriously, have a look at the Flik- it'll restore your faith in Gerber! I'm still disappointed that they are expanding hte line of cheap tools, but at least they are still making some good stuff.

Only shortcoming I can see on the Flix is the driver length, but I have the Bit kit still from the Suspension, and i would love to see if it would fit>

If you don't like the typical Gerber Plier System try to find a Legend 800 or an Urban Ledgend 700. They're a little bulky but they have spring loaded pliers and a more familiar butterfly opening system.

Second seems to be the place to get them, I've seen both models sell in NIB condition for 40-50$.
