Got some of this coming in 2.5mm.

I'm thinking about pulling a Recruit apart and rebuilding it like a Cadet but using Carbon side plates instead of Alox. ... now that could look nice

it would be like a.......    (wait for it)....     "Space Cadet"

I wonder if the carbon fiber would support the force of the backsprings acting upon the pins if you build it without the outer scale liner.

This is assuming, of course, that I understood how you were describing your construction methods.

...only one way to find out.  (if you build it, they will come.)

Depends on the quality of the layup. I'm assuming it will be similar to the carbon sheet they use for TRex helicopter frames. that stuff is tough as all hell, so should cope with it easy enough.
If not I could always bond in some brass bushes.

Sounds like a very neat idea; maybe it could be used for the liner as well?

Keen to hear how it turns out mate  :tu: :tu:

I have a few ebay CF sheet sellers saved but have not made the leap yet. I would love to do a CF scaled SAK + still have the tweezers cut out

I was bidding on a "my first victorinox" with saw to strip out the saw and make it a Space Cadet Plus... but the damn thing ended up going for as much as I can get a brand new one for on eBay Germany.
Might still do it anyway...or I could "plus" my red alox Cadet. Decisions decisions...

Still waiting on the post for the CF sheet.

First look at the Space Cadet...   excuse the crappy pic's.   Will get some better ones done in the next few days.

Only pinned yet,  not peened the other ends.

The carbon seems to hold up to the backspring pressure well enough, all blades and tools have extra snap.

The middle liner is 0.032" Titanium in keeping with the space age materials theme. Not sure if I'll anodize that or leave it natural,  but the blue would look nice...

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
Do like the space cadet name, i think you should bite the bullet and put a hidden phillips backlayer in. You would need to put the blade and opener layers in reverse so it tucks between the outer carbon fiber (visually looks alox like/front back)

I do understand though that some prefer the smooth unbroken backline of the recruit etc. A 84mm tinker gives you all the parts you need

That looks very nice!  Glad to hear the CF is up to the task.

Are there backspring tools?  Just curious why there is the 4th pin on a Cadet

:facepalm:I used the original side liners for a drilling guide and they are the same as any other 84mm and drilled the 4th hole before I thought  :ahhh  That's one of the reasons it's not peened yet  ::)

Think I might have to make another set and use these on a Waiter or Sportsman.

Finally managed to pick up an ebay sportsman after being sniped for about 5 of them. So these scales and their damn 4th hole can go for that.
Will make another set for the space cadet.
I could make a whole series, I have 4 recruits counting the one broken down here.
Carbon, Titanium, Stainless, Brass, Wood, Leather, Bone, Horn, Stone (composite stone like benchtops), some of that Acrylic I just picked up....  I'm gonna need more Recruits.

But think about it.. Recruits from the stone-age to the space-age...

It needs scissors!  A carbon fiber 84/85 wenger would be pretty sweet!  Anyone stateside want tot give it a shot?

Holy crap, each sheet is about $20 and you can get at least 7 pairs of scales per sheet. Wow. How much does an CNC mill cost for a 300x100mm sheet?

It would be a nice low labor way to get an alox type of scale for 85mm wenger and 91mm Vic. Pinning would not be too crazy as it is real hard to mar a carbon fiber surface.

1mm liners would also be possible.  Wow, this might be worth an order or two if the cnc milling is not too crazy. Anyone have a guesstimate to the price!

You mean the 0.3 mm liners or the scales?  Your work on the carbon fiber scales is pretty xciting. Cheap, sturdy, textured, awesome. When I get back to tpe, I'll check around for a mill.

Anyone have cad drawing of 85mm wenger scales and 91 mm Vic celidor?

Cheers
