here in Spain we also have a word for the love of the land and nostalgia of your birthplace, we call it "Morriña"

I guess all countries/cultures have their term or word for that

I believe that term in English is "Homesick." Stronger than the Portuguese "saudades" as I believe "saudades" is simply to miss someone or someplace, whereas I think "Morrina" is a much deeper homesickness, longing, pining. Is that about right, Peacent?

And do you also have Portuguese blood? Or have you visited there a lot? Or know a lot of folks from there? One mightn't reference a word like "suadades" out of the blue without the language being within their comfort zone.

I've been to Brasil on a number of occasions, my GF being from there originally

No, but whilst trying to figure out exactly what hiraeth meant I came across saudade.  There's also this:

I suppose the concept of hiraeth must be found in many cultures, but there's no direct English translation.  Morriña seems close too.

Dude, really?!

You can't define saudade. You can only feel it. It's something that makes people who don't understand a word of portuguese cry when they hear fado. It's what bonds portuguese toghether. What they say without words, with just a glance. It's a happy sadness, a sad happiness. It's nothing of what I said. It's more than that, it's less than that. It's... saudade.

Well according to Butch, 49 years ago TODAY a vulture puked on a rock as he walked by and I came out and he called me Douglas...
At least that was one story, not sure what to believe.

I won't refer to the Portuguese term/feeling, but the Morriña is definitely a powerful, strong and moving sentiment to have, very deep in meaning and profound. Nailed it   :tu:

Well, Cesária Évora is from Cabo Verde (Cape Verde, or, more to the point, "Cape Green"). It was a portuguese colony for hundreds of years. They speak a mix of portuguese and local crioulo dialect (creole). She is famous for her mornas, a type a slow, sad, nostalgic balads. It has some similarities with fado, in terms of lirics and melody.

She had one of her songs used in the film Underground, by Emir Kusturica.

Amália Rodrigues, one of the greatest fado interpreters, had a song called "Morrinha".

We also call morrinha to that very light rain, that kind of drizzle between rain and mist. Another name for it is "chuva de molha-tolos" (fool-wetting rain). Probably because people don't regard it as rain, don't protect themselves and end up all wet.

I can only blame my parents for the user name. Vidar is a little known God in Norse mythology, which saved the world at some point. (No pressure there then! :D I usually just save money during sales...)

I can only imagine the disappointment of this Vidar God: His father Odin got a weekday named after himself (Wednesday - it made sense in old style spelling). And the brother Thor also got a weekday named after him (Thursday), and then some movies, comics and what nots. All poor Vidar got was me and some other Vidars.

Not really  :D

I'm far more colorful and with less, worse and more rambulent hair. I guess this Vidal does wonders for hair then; more, better and orderly. I should try him sometime just for the challenge.

So, hmm...

Moon's day
Tyr's day
Vidar's day
Thor's day
Freya's day
Saturn's day (from the old roman days)
Sun's day

about right?

With the day issue taken care of I guess the next is the public image? Thor is known for having a cool hammer, and doing thunder and lightning. Vidar on the other hand only has a shoe with a thick sole and is silent. It is hard to get much hype over that. No wonder Thor got the weekday.

Pretty much as you described it with the exception of Vidars day. A weird mixture of celestial stuff in the sky and old norse/ anglo/ german Gods.

The Vikings did their unfair share to spread the norse language and other ideas as part of their, eh, various activites. The Roman calender and weekdays existed before though, so likely just changed around the names a bit. I have no idea what English called weekdays before say year 1000 though? More planets? Other Gods?
