Wenger PocketGrip arrived today- Lotsa Pics
on: September 28, 2012, 08:33:25 PM
I had to add one of these to my MT collection. It just looked so weird and different and I've never played with tools of this style, with the fixed plier head fused with a SAK body.

This was new in box, and it came with a sheath.  There is no lanyard option, which I normally hate but this one would be pretty oddly shaped for pocket carry.

The sliding switch on the bottom releases the spring loaded pliers.

It has a fully serrated blade which Id rather be blade edge.  It looks like it would be quite a good utilitarian cutter though.

The saw has a metric/imperical ruler one on each side.  The rest of the components seem pretty standard.

Of course being a plier based tool, it also has.. pliers! And the usual wire cutters.

Now I was under the assumption that this was a T handle type screwdriver tool, but I was so happy to be wrong!  The bits go in the tools end and you can use it like a regular driver.  This is the best feature of the tool.  The bits are also stored IN the tool under the plier handle.  I like this so much better than having them stored outside the tool in the sheath.

The tool that takes the usual spot of the corkscrew is actually a bit extender and fits right into the end of the tool.

I love this oddball tool and I'm happy to have part of the super hero MT team!

Cheers

Good write up.
I have one on order too, from eBay.

I missed out on the one Mike was selling and just had to get one!

That's pretty cool.  Beefy!  Probably not the best model to carry loose in the pocket.

Chunky came to mind when seeing this.. Very nice! Several useful tools packed into this compact, beefy package of a little SAK. That bit extender in particular and the overall solution for the bits and screwdriver, wow.

 :salute:

I hear you!  There have been several I just had to own, then they become paperweights or conversation pieces!

I don't think its something you would carry, more something you keep on your desk or bench etc.

Do you find that usable?
I have a grip clone (chinese open type plier) and two leatherman clones (chinese closed type pliers). I bought them to decide what I like best and then buy a Swiss one, Wengergrip or Swiss Toll. In fact I found all of them usable, more so one of the closed types that has a kind of spring (no real locking for the tools) and a wrench with bits in the seath. But a Swisschamp tool is always better in my opinion. The small pliers are better suited for delicate work (what I do mostly) and it has so many other tools no Plier-centered tool has.
But I find that Mike Horn type plier very- very interesting.
These open type tools look very mean and nasty, isn't it? Fat also. But the wrench arrangement is very clever.

Great Photos.  I also really like this tool. Similar to you I don't see my self carrying it, but I really like it.  Need to beef up the Wiki section on this one, I may need to borrow your photos  :).

Hopefully I'll set up artificial lighting again soon, now that the long days of summer are gone, and catch-up on my backlog of photos this winter... well I doubt it's possible to really catch up.

Borrow any you need.   :tu:

If the pliers could somehow fold inside like on the bigger ranger models, I think I would carry it then.
