How spoiled are we
on:
September 25, 2012, 12:48:01 AM
At work my Streamline flashlight grew legs and walked away (which is difficult because we are a locked facility).
So my boss grudgly pulled out a new light from the stock room and handed it to me with this comment "It's not LED".
Slapping it in the charger I didn't care I just wanted a new light. The next morning while checking a
Vehicle I noticed how intensely bright this was, pushing the switch again I was in total darkness
"It turned off" no half power setting no strobe setting no S.O.S.
Then it dawned on me "This was a standard flashlight no thrills no bells no whistles" something my Grandfather would have had.
Smiling I thought back to a time when things just did one thing they had one purpose.
Sometimes I think it does the soul good to turn off the light and be in darkness.

I still remember being very happy with my AAA mini-maglite when I first got it, it made the dark places lighter. I also remember being just as happy when I got my first LED (a Nuwai QIII) a super bright 70 lumen! (A very, very optimistic number IMO). Torches have come a LONG way in my working life and they seem to be set to carry on evolving.
Ah, the Nuwai QIII.

I started with a AA maglite, and now have lights ranging from 80-450 lumens.
Yet, I want more. I will hopefully have some new lights soon in the 600-1000 lumen range.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

When I was a kid, AA Mini Mags were the light to have.
Now with the LED models, I think they are still a good light for $20, but I still have more ranging in size & brightness.

My first real quality torch was a 2AA minimag which at the time was impressive this would be '88 to '89 and believe it or not I still have an incan minimag (not the same one ) so just for a laugh I compared it with Jock jnrs new i3
how times have changed.
So long story short yes we are spoiled by the current tech and I am looking forward to what the next 20 years will bring

Oh, we're spoiled rotten.
I remember when the flashlights of my youth were these bulky things that took two d cells and gave out a dim yellow light for about an hour before fading out to to a dim glow and then darkness. NOw we have little tiny fhlashlights the size of a single AA cell, give out a bright white light for several hours. We take for granted a mundane light like a Fenix EO1, yet that EO1 is a miracle compared to the flashlights we had in the 1950's.
Yes, we spoiled rotten!
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

I agree
In fact, I can't even remember what it was like to have such dull lights!
