What do you think the most versatile MT is?

What do you think the most versatile MT is?

This one may be a shock to some of you but I am going to say the LM Surge!  The reason behind this is because it has everything that many MT's don't have ( ex. awl, serrated blade, file and saw, and scissors). Also you can use the 42 piece bit kit along with it and have many different bits....

What do you guys think?

I would say the multitool that has everything the LM Core has, plus scissors. Is there such a beast?

This is heresy coming from a happy Charge owner, but even though I have no interest in using, the most versatile MT from a pure options standpoint has to be one of the big victorinoxes. I'm not that familiar with the variety of models, but I was looking at a Champion Plus or some such the other day and it had just about everything you might need except nipples.

But I also agree with Def's opinion of the Surge. It's debatable whether one needs the t-shank for hacksaws, but the fact that it's there definitely increases the versatility.

The Swisschamp XLT has a lot more tools on it than the surge.

Sak's aside, I think the most versatile tool are the Sog Multi's - you have to love a multi that you can disassemble/reassemble yourself, and chop and change tools you like (within reason).

Sak's included, some of those ridiculously huge ones with built-in watches, compass', magnifying glasses etc would have to be.

Aside from one handed or outside opening blades, what doesn't the SOG Powerlock that other tools have concerning pure function? 

Standout things that it does have on other tools are two nice crimpers and compound leverage.

I'll go with the Powerlock for "most versatile".

My other EDC, the Swisstool, has extremely nice impliments that all excel at their intended use, but the SOG tools can get the job done also.  I actually prefer the SOG awl over the Vic.

Even though I don't own one I think the ol' SOG Power Plier may be the most versatile self-contained tool made in this modern era. It as 6 layers of tools per handle and the option to swap tools out.

Hmm. How would you rate versatility?

1.)# of implements and inherent functions of, including unintended functions (the tips of the PowerLock pliers fit a certain size hex head excellently and can be used as an awkward driver.)

2.)Ability to be used in the stretch position?

3.)Overall size and strength, positive and negative. E.g. The Core/Surge are too big for some jobs, but big enough for others that cannot be accomplished by smaller tools.

4.) Length of drivers in regard to tunneled fasteners?

5.) Etc., and so forth.

Personally I rate my tools by #1, never had any issue with any of the other things. I'm by the numbers in regards to implements and functions.

(I don't think bit kits add to the versatility. I go old school, if it ain't on the tool it doesn't count to me, of course I have a Wave with the 42-piece bit kit in my go-bag.  )

I never noticed the plier tips can turn a certain sized hex screw...but it just so happens there's a machine I'll be breaking down somewhat tomorrow that has a lot of hex bolts

And did you mean Power Plier, or Power Lock in that first paragraph?

Id take my Charge TTi with the cutting hook to the Surges awl any day, I love the Surge scissors though, gotta pick one of them up sometime.

Probably the Spirit , but I also enjoy my Charge Ti , love the one handed opening master blade . Admittedly the Charge is inferior to the Spirit , but I still luv it !

But seriously, if I were judging for pure number of different functions, I think I have to go with a huge SAK that has all the normal tools, magnifying glass, tweezers, kitchen sink, etc. If I were doing a weight to functionality thing, I'd probably go with a Squirt P4, Juice KF4, or just a strong/light knife (heresy!).

I agree I can fix quite a bit on my truck or around the house with a basic SAK and some DuckTape.Lately i have been trying different ways of always having some on me.

Or neatly wrapped around a Bic lighter.  It adds a nice grip also, and duct tape burns pretty well if you ever needed it.

I have about a 1" wide, 12" long piece wrapped around my P-38 attached to my keychain.

Seems I'd forgotten how many layers the PowerLock actually has. 

 However, I refuse to retract my earlier statement, the PowerPlier is older and more experienced than the young PowerLock.

Or my patented "wrapped around a Flosscard" gives you cordage, and ducktape in one package 

The one in my wallet also has 1mm nylon cord and insulation tape around it for extra usefulness

Can you get that with a Pocket Clip?

I took a Mini Maglight with LED Upgrade fromn Niteieze and wrapped about 30feet or so of DentalFloss around a sewing needle and the body of the flashlight.I the wrapped a couple of 10foot sections of DuckTape side by side over the floss/needle/body.I finished it off with a layer of electrical tape over the Duck Tape.I have been keeping this light on a Paracord laynard and swicthing it out with a Solitaire as my "Spare" light at work.

I figure now even if I am seperated from my PSK and I have my light and an SAK and my keys with my BSA Firestarter I will have some basic problem solvers with me.The wrap also adds a bit of grip and thickness to the light that could help if used as an impact weapon of sorts.
