Peening question ...
on: October 30, 2012, 06:59:38 PM
I tried doing a search but couldn't find the answer to something I'd been chewing over ...

If building a SAK that's destined for wood scales is it really necessary to peen to bushings or can the pins be peened direct to the liners? I appreciate that the liners are soft so a rouge smack with a hammer might smurf things up a bit, but aside from that I can't see any reason for using/reclaiming the bushings other than giving the celidor scales something to clip to

Am I missing something?

i have peened 1 or 2 knives directly to the liners, and no problems, you have to left a little bit more pin so the new scales have something to grab to  :tu:

Al, Obviously Sidharth's advice is from the master  :dd:

If I was doing it I would try putting a washer over the pin to spread the load a little as the liners are very thin

I don't have any delusions whatsoever that I'll get anywhere near the calibre of Sidhartha's work  :hatsoff:

well ..... I have plans for a 84, an 85, and a 91. I've not seen anyone else try what I'm planning with the 84 yet, but part of it might be a little more tricky than I can be bothered with. The 85 keeps changing direction frequently but then coming back to the base idea, and the 91 ... well that changes every time I pick the bloody donor knives up  ::)

Don't get too excited though - the chances of any of it leaving the head and trickling down to the fingers anytime soon is pretty slim
