They will polish up. I've only cut out one of them so far but due to the spruing marks i've had to sand the large faces flat. The plan is to get them all pattern anodised.

The trits are 2.5 x 10mm gardner fishing indicators.

I need to find a place that sells tritium..............

As Nuphoria said there are some good tritium sellers on Cuddly Panda Fanciers but i don't think they sell some of the sizes that i use in some of my stuff.
I use ebay and i believe that some of the UK based gardner tritium sellers will ship worldwide.

Thanks everyone, i'll update my tritium bead thread once their done.

They all look amazing Tofty. Did you need to mess around with the dimensions a lot before everything came out just so, or do the match the 3D model very closely?

Also, forgive my ignorance, but are the sprue connections really needed? Couldn't you print out all the items in a single pass without any connection between them? Just looking at the bits, they're going to start out as separate items as the printer works up from the bottom, it's only about a third of the way up that the sprue connects them...

Thanks guys and gals,

Hi Ozymandias, dimension wise there has been a fair amount of trial and error.
Internal features like the hexes tend to end up smaller than on the model while the external dimensions change little.
Most of the models have been modified after i ordered the original prototype but some of that was me being overly fussy.
Originally the only way for me to be sure of getting it right was to order something unmodified then measure the error and correct for it. Now i have a number of correction factors i work to but these can change depending on material depth and wall thickness relative to an internal features dimensions.

For the hex bits the spruing isn't necessary, it's a throw back to when i was trying to get them printed in titanium by i.materialise who won't print multi-part models, turns out they won't print sprued grouped models either which is a real shame (and yet they did print the beads, weird).
However although shapeways will print multi-part models in stainless steel they point out that it greatly increases the cost of production for them as there is a fair amount of post printing processing so i was trying not to take the piss essentially.

This is probably going to read like a bit if a shameless plug but we'll see......

As some of you are well aware there are some pretty good designers on Shapeways, kicking out all kinds of things, with multi-tools and EDC gadgets amongst them.
One such item i came across was this, called the Head Turner.
It's a clever little tool that packs a useful array of fuctions into the smallest possible package.
There are however a couple of things that i thought arn't quite perfect; the phillips and flat driver profiles.

I decided to model a version of this tool with some of the tool profiles i'd used previously, including the slightly starred hex spanner shape i used on my original tofty prybar.

This is what i came up with:

I felt a bit bad for doing this so i contacted the original designer, explaining what i'd done and gave him the new model file which he has since put up as a new model called the Head Turner: Tofty Edition which i think sounds really cool.

Anyway the point is that this little tool might well be the smallest useable phillips/flat driver on the market; smaller than the screwpop, the maratac screw keys and torqkey and all the other things i've bought in the past to do the job.

(Just to clarify;- i don't get any money from the sales of the Head Turner: Tofty Edition)

actually no, the centre is a 10mm rather than a 6.35mm (1/4").

Thanks Nuphoria, although it's not as if large amounts of money are on the line so i'm not sure my ethics have really been tested.

Two issues with that:
1. Such a modified design still wouldn't be mine so the original designer would have to get involved, but i would probably have to do the actual modelling again and this time i'd probaby want paying etc etc (not really).
2. More importantly i really don't think something that size could be used as a 1/4" bit driver; it's simply too small to achieve enough torque for usual driving tasks and your hand would be too close to the work for comfort.
In my opinion the Star Driver is about as small as a usable bit driver can be.

I might draw up a triple pronged version without the 13mm spanner in the back to see how much cheaper it would be.
I've also thought about implementing your idea for the star driver so keep an eye out for updates.

Bit of an update...

Got the first part of my bike tool from shapeways, all seems well.

Specs:
15mm open ended pedal spanner,
14mm spanner,
12mm spanner,
9mm spanner,
8mm spanner,
1/4" hex bit driver,
5mm hex driver,
1/4" square driver,
Flat driver 5.5 x 1mm,
Phillips driver No.2,
Tyre lever,
Bottle opener.

The other parts will be along eventually.

I re-did the Star Driver with Stealth's suggestions and the ability to hold the little Head turner tool.

The tool selection has also been changed so there is no overlap between the two items.
Another torx driver (T30) replaces the 4mm hex driver and a 6mm hex driver replaces the 5mm hex driver.
The flat driver has been enlarged and 1/4" hexs have been added around all posts, except the square driver, to allow the Star Driver to be used with external ratchets and bars.

A few more bits to finish up so stay tuned.

I like the Star Driver the most as it would fit my needs. If several different options were done I could carry two or three different Star Drivers with no problem. They would be lighter than a Parker Multi

*edit- I do like the spanner idea as well :tu:

Very cool stuff, Tofty!

I know a bike nut that would love the bike tool... if you decide to let people try printing that one directly via your Shapeways page, like you have for some of the others, I'd have to pick one up for him for his birthday.

It'll be up on shapeways by the end of the weekend but as it's designed to be part of a set the tool selection has too many gaps for it be really useful on it's own so i'd wait until they're all done.
I won't be able to order the other prototypes till late march though.

Well i still haven't finished the other bike tools but that doesn't mean they'll never get done......honestly.

I had a bit of a retrospective recently as to all the one-piece tools i've designed so far and it turns out there are more than i'd expected.

Right proper update time......

Firstly: Star Driver 2.

There's not too much to say about this one, it's exactly as the render shows in in the earlier post.

Secondly: The Brewzi (or as i suggested the BrUZI)

This was a commissioned piece and apparently it's for adjusting the front and rear sights on UZIs.
The original brief was just for the sight adjuster and bottle opener but i added the 1/4" hex driver just to help stop it just being about "beer and guns". Also with the o-ring groove, the end looks a little bit like a thingy, hehe.

Thirdly: Challenge Coins.

The less said about these the better.

Fourthly: T-Bar.

This was another commissioned piece and i think it came out really well.
The bit holder in the tip, unlike my original Tofty Prybar, has a hex profile so the bit can't fall out of the slot sideways, even without the o-rings.
The tool is only 1/8" thick so it works out to be almost exactly the same price to print as my original prybar which is 5mm thick.

And then The Long Bar.

This tool is pretty much a rearranged T-Bar with some of the compromises, like the prying edge, sorted out in a high-torque enabling, chunky bar design.
Also a fair few more hex sizes were added.

Lastly: Pocket Clip Tool.

This was yet another commission, designed to be laser-cut from sheet and then formed but the customer stopped communicating with me so i will be putting it up on Shapeways sometime soon.
The model needs sprues that hold up the clip during printing that have to be cut off which is a bit of a shame.

Right i think that's all of them explained.......or is it?
