Just wondered how that coating is holding up to actual use

If its properly applied cerakote, it'll be super tough. I've used my own cerkoted tools on site for over 6 months and all it has is dirt and grime. The coating itself is still brand new.

Thats good to know!  I imagine is has alot to do with the substrate too.  Meaning that if cerakote was on aluminum SAK scales, I would expect it to be more fragile than on steel tool MT handles.

I suppose that's my question really  :D :D

I know Mat has one which he opened once, and the abrasion between the handles alone was enough to reveal a bit of stainless beneath ::) (Sorry Mat  :salute:) Since then I believe it's been safely stashed away so I wondered if anyone has put one to use.

I've heard good things about cerakote, but I've not always been impressed by Leatherman. I'm wondering what the nett result is and if they've actually made a decent job of it or if it's just for show  :)

It really comes down to how they applied it. Jeff who applied mine mediablasts the parts before coating them. This gives it maximum adhesion. The process at LM is a mystery.

To PROPERLY coat it, you really need to blast 'em.

Totally agree Eric  :tu: The key is the key  :P ;) :D

Now we need to see if they did  ;) I have a sneaky suspicion that if they've done it properly on anything it'll be the OHT (where every single one is coated), but I wouldn't be surprised if they just slapped the coating on a nice polished surface on the Fuse and Wave  ::)

'Opened once'  :twak: :twak: :twak: :twak: :D :D. Nope it was multiple openings  :pok: :pok:  :D.

But yep I agree with the above , how well LM has done the cerakote coating is the million dollar question. Mine is not a user & I am 100% ok with that   :D.
I suspect the finish is better than their regular(awful) painted coatings but maybe not in the same league of the custom speSmurfpillsed cerakote coaters out there  , I could be wrong though  :D :D

I've been carrying my Wave everyday to work since I've gotten it. It's only been about a weeks worth of carry, and the most used tool on it would have to be the blade so far. I've only really used it for opening up little plastic packages of earplugs. This was just to use it. I carry a folder on me too.

If it needs to be used in a heavy duty way, it will be used. But I'm a truck driver and the chances are going to be few and far between.

I've used the pliers a couple of times for very light duty things, too.

The coating is not coming off on my hands or anything. Unfortunately, that's about all that I can report on the durability of it.

Oh, sorry, forgot to mention that I also used the tool to replace a light bulb in one of the marker lights on the truck. Also used the pliers to push the pin back into the air brake knob for the parking brake. The darn pin likes to slide out, so at least once a month I have to use my multitool or pliers to push it back in.

For sure a good use for an $85 multitool to help stop a +/- 70,000-lb truck.

But like I was saying, it's held up great in the week I've had it.

getpower , the use pattern that you describe is just the type of chores Multi's are intended for . I believe the orange coating will help make the tool easy to find at both work and play , you will most likley be the only kid on the block with one .

Yeah, I'll keep you informed. Reports will be few and far between but I'm probably the only person on here that intends to EDC the tool.

I'll say this, it's been another week and its doing fine so far.

Both the Orange and camo fuse wave seen a good bit of use. The cerakote has been holding its own. the camo fuse has been used alot more at work only cause i have had it longer. The Orange fuse is carried in the cardboard leather sheath with the inner exposed rivets. No scratches or knicks on the sides of the tool. Just the bit of friction wear at the plier head. I wouldnt expect the coating to stay true in that spot.

Thanks Ben  :tu: So would you say they got this coating truly as durable as it should be, or would you say it's still a bit early to tell (based on what it's been through)?

Still early I would say. I never gave any thought to the duribility of the coating till this thread. The stuff hasent flaked off yet so its doing its job. I'll rotate the pair for some time at work see how it goes. i am curious to know if the surface is roughed up so the cerakote bonds better.

Since Eric mentioned it, is there some way to do a bead-blasting of the surface to be coated, like with a very fine media that would create more surface texture and improve the durability of the coating?

And, is the reason it doesn't work as well on aluminum because of its oxidation properties vs. iron/steel?

I'd love to have an orange Wave, but I'd find a use for it; I don't keep shelf queens.  That said, I guess I wouldn't mind it developing a little bit of wear, but I'd be pretty upset if it started losing big flakes of the coating.

Anyway, I don't know a whole lot about metallurgy, just what I learned working as a bicycle mechanic when I was in college, so don't mind my possibly ignorant questions about coating.

The pros blast with 120 grit aluminum oxide before coating.  Who knows if leatherman does but it would be interesting to compare one of Erics custom cerakoted mods with a stock leatherman coated one.
