The Victorinox 74mm thread
on: November 20, 2012, 03:52:39 PM
My personal opinion is that the Victorinox 74mm line does not get as much attention as it deserves. So I thought a dedicated 74mm SAK thread would be nice.

Here's my collection of 74mm SAKs.

Top row:
- Mammoth tusk Executive. Possibly the most beautiful SAK I own;
- Red cellidor Executive. Single leaf scissors spring, but no Victoria tang stamp;
- Similar one, aluminum tipped tweezers, but without keyring;
- Another old Executive, with keyring;
- Victoria Executive with nickel silver shield, no keyring. This one has thinner scales than newer SAKs;
- Blue Executive, there's an unknown company logo on the back;
- Executive with grey cellidor scales. A rather uncommon color: I removed the company logo (LIVIT);
- Green cellidor Executive: a beautiful color;
- Yellow/Purple/Grey abstract Ambassador, part of Collection no. 1.

Middle row:
- Complete Collection no. 1 (Ambassadors with keyring);
- Complete Collection no. 2 (Ambassadors with keyring).

Bottom row:
- RocKnife Ambassador, Rosa Betha;
- RocKnife Ambassador, Andeer Granite;
- Money Clip, silver alox;
- Executive, red alox;
- Smooth black alox Ambassador, no cross & shield, no company logo, Victoria tang stamp;
- Smooth gold alox Executive, probably from the 1960s;
- Windsor, Stainless Steel, guilloché scales;
- Windsor, Stainless Steel, guilloché scales;
- Windsor, Stainless Steel, guilloché scales;
- Director, brushed Stainless Steel.

My goal is to have at least all the different scale variations (colors, materials, designs) that were once available. Smooth green alox and Pantheon Granite are already on their way to me ;)

Very nice indeed :tu:

The only one I have is a silver moneyclip, but I really like it :)

Wow! Nice collection. I have a Ivory colored Ambassador without keyring & love it. I am not big on keyrings much preferring to just pocket the knife.

My mammoth tusk Executive is my EDC and has been since it arrived.  It is a perfect tool for the office and is a delight to fiddle with.  :)

Is that a cellidor one?

It's a bit fat though, isn't it? :) Those mammoth tusk scales are pretty thick.

Yes it is cellidor..! I think they ran a limited production of this color. I could be wrong though.. I think it might be white cellidor but, looks Ivory color to me..

It's about the same thickness as a Farmer, which to me, is the ideal width of a SAK.  Much thinner and it's hard to fully manipulate the tool without occasional flops/drops.

Nice array Reinier  :tu:

I just have a Director which sits in my home office along with a Business Tool. Ive owned a few other metal scaled 74's but never a celidor I don't think  :think:

Overall I must say that personally I prefer the Wenger 65s (specifically the PTC/Evo88)over the Victorinox 74s. 65mm is the biggest I want for keychain carry, 84mm the smallest for pocket carry. I did carry my Director in my wallet for a while though, till I switched it for a Classic so I'd have a toothpick

Great collection you have there. The blue, gray and green got my attention immediately. :D I knew you liked the 74mm line but I was under the impression you had the Director already. :shrug:

My favourite is the Executive in black. My EDC when wearing a suit. I have a red one too but have hardly carried it. I reversed the scales on mine. (I did it on the Rambler I carry on my keys too) The orientation as it comes with the toothpick and tweezers pointing down away from the keyring never seemed logical to me. :think:

I only have a plain Executive. I like it but it is redundant between the keychain 58mm (Mini Swisschamp) and the full 84/91/93mm models (from Cadet to full Swisschamp XLT).
It has few blades for its size for EDC. It makes a good collectible though as is evident by your beautiful collection.

Another Executive owner here. As a matter of fact, that battered old Executive of mine was also my first ever SAK.

Just the two for me with a Ambassador (with keyring) and an Executive.  Oddly I don't mind the Ambassador on my keys, yet I do find the Executive just a little too big/heavy.  I am happy to carry either of them loose in my pocket though.

Personally I prefer 74mm models over the 58mm SAKs. I have a Classic on my key chain but I think it's too fiddly for me (big hands) :)

Two more 74mm SAKs arrived today!

Thanks Marios :)

I agree with you Reinier.  The 58mm is a little too small for my tastes.  The 74mm is a much better size for me. :tu:

Does anyone have side by side comparison pictures of 74mm next to 58mm? I've seen a 74mm.

Are they thicker than comparative layered 58mm ?

oh there are quite a few sizes I'm missing here. :D There's no 95mm nor 100mm here either. ;) But the most frequent pocket carried sizes are here.

Some Executives -  The old mother-of-pearl has a blade thickness of .085 mm but the other Victorias are .090 like today's.  The orange peeler early had no teeth, then about 15 small teeth and now 8 large teeth.  The tweezer had the golden high-brass head, then alox, and now plastic; and it went from short head to longer head in both metal and plastic types.  These changes might be visible in the photos.  And course the scissor-spring went from single to double, blued to stainless.  The grind on the early nail-cleaner was rounder than now. Maybe the only nail-file from either company today with real cut lines rather than electro-whatevered.
An Exec is my EDC - Excellent Dependable Companion.

I've carried an Executive every day on my keys for a several years now.  Nothing fancy, and it is getting kind of beat up, but I know it's there when I need it.  Always a useful little sucker.  :tu:  Still haven't peeled an orange with it, though that tool has seen plenty of use as a small serrated blade.  Love the long nail file too!
