My first Executive arrived today. Saw this a few days ago and, on yet another another SAK impulse buy, snapped it up.

Customised solid copper scales on a new SAK with brass pins.
Should hopefully develop a decent unique patina over time.
This one is definitely going to be one of my watch pocket EDC's (watch out MiniChamp!).

(This Brit now has an excuse to hunt down and watch an episode of MacGyver  :D )

Grunthos, how does the knife look these days?
My Mods: 58mm Workshop, 91mm Picnicker, CyberCompact
Some Fav's: long nail file models, vintage unusual stainless
Quirk: I like the metal file more than the wood saw

Early days yet, slowly developing a patina (and a few scratches! - soft metal).
Promise I'll post a few more photos in the fullness of time  ;)

One of my favorite SAKs!    :like:

I seriously think the Ambassador is an underrated SAK. Maybe the most underrated SAK ever. And now it is discontinued.

It does really look and feel like it’s about the right size. Hits that sweet spot like the Cadet and the  84mms hit as well. The 58mm is freaking small for a man to even handle, and the 91 & 93mm with more than 2/3 layers start getting to be a bit much in the  pocket…. Definitely a sweet spot b/w 74/84mm!

Just discovered this older thread and I've had a great time looking at all the beautiful Executives and other 74s. I was hoping someone might be able to answer a question. Does anyone know approximately when the Executive was introduced by Victorinox?

@psyjohn: According to Elsi Nox's Encyclopedia of Victorinox Pocket Knives, the Model 656 was developed in the 1950s and the series (Executive, Director, and Companion) were listed in the 1958 catalogue. I've seen reference to it being "in production" in 1957. It was discontinued in late 2020, with reports of it being gone in October.

Another thread that went by unnoticed for me....

I discovered the Executive mid-2022, and a year later thought it was prudent to get a backup. By that time they had been discontinued for a while, and it took some effort to track one down at a reasonable price. Fortunately I found the last two in stock at a local retailer in Tasmania, and grabbed them both.

The Executive pairs so well with a 93mm alox!

I was taking a cruise out of Seattle earlier this month, and found a few in stock at Seattle Cutlery, in Pike’s Place Market. Bought one with white scales, and one with blue, and they shipped them home for $5, USPS. If anyone’s looking for any, might be worth calling them up to see if there’s any left.

Thanks ET! I had suspected it was around '57 as that year comes up occasionally when referring to early versions of the knife, and I've never seen an earlier date mentioned. Now I feel I "must" find a copy of that encyclopedia.

My story started similarly. I discovered the Executive in 2020, fell in love with it, and decided I needed a backup. Now, I have 35 "extra"  Executives/Companions/Directors in multiple colors of celidor, Alox, wood, horn, mother of pearl, and stainless.   Some people might say I have a problem but I attribute that to a lack of understanding.  :)

Completely agree about pairing an Exec with a Pioneer; they complement each other very well.

It's been around 3 years since I heard about the Executive during a Chuck Yeager memorial challenge.

I've picked up around 10 or so but it's getting harder to find any at a reasonable price these days.

The only way I've found "reasonably" priced Executives and the like, is in knife lots.  Otherwise some sellers want crazy money.

The last one I picked up was this beat up Alcan Alox.
Don't have a clue what the original owner did to the scales but the tools and blades were really good.  Outstanding springs too.  Took an Emory board to the worst of it and put it into an extra leather pouch.
I got it for a really good price too.

Well, you certainly make me feel better about "going overboard" when I bought that second backup!

When I got into my Whittier phase , I told my wife that I needed a second one as a spare.  The third one because I needed a backup spare in case the primary one broke or I lost it.
When I got to the fourth it was there to have an additional backup.   When the fifth, sixth etc, started rolling in I just added them on my shelf and admired the beauty.
The rest, they say, is HIS-story.

Thanks ET! I had suspected it was around '57 as that year comes up occasionally when referring to early versions of the knife, and I've never seen an earlier date mentioned. Now I feel I "must" find a copy of that encyclopedia.

It's available as an eBook on Amazon, but here's a link to the 656 page on elsinox: https://elsinox.com/VICTORINOX-ELSENER,-Schwyz/74-mm/No-656-executive-director-companion/

Looking through some old U.S. catalogues in the wiki, the 656 was called Companion up to the 1980s; the Executive in the 50s to 70s was a 58mm with a nail file, scissors, and a blade. In the 80s, the Companion was a 58mm with scissors.
