Old Jimbo certainly knows his stuff when it comes to axes. It was that article and this one ...

http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/tinyhatchets2.html

... which led me to try out the Vaughan Mini instead of laughing it off as a joke. I've not done any extreme stuff like her does here, but it's a good example of the person and abilities being more important that reliance solely on the tool  :salute:

Very interesting. Being a typical geek with no discernible upper body strength, anything about lowering weight is useful. :)

Love Old Jimbo's articles.  :tu:  I'm also a bit of a fan of mini-hatchets having a mini Wetterling one myself.

Neat, loved the wedging.

I've always put minis like the Vaughn Subzero into the same class as a good tomahawk. Not heavy enough to be a true hatchet, bites deeper and easier to carry than most large knives.

Vaughn's sometimes need a bit of work on the edge before they reach full potential . My ex father in law used a mini hatchet , with a shortened handle for a lot of his hunting chores . Don't underestimate them , depends on the skill of the user .

Mine certainly did, but it's a very nice tool for very little cost and a little elbow grease. They can be very erratic in quality, and they're better bought from a store where you can be selective. The first one I got online was awful, so I sent it back with instructions of how to pick a decent one for me  :D the replacement was much better

That looks sweet Tony  :tu: My Vaughen Mini (Baby's first axe) has always impressed me how capable it is for something so small, and since I borrowed your linisher to tidy the edge up it's been heaps better still  :tu:

The linisher is a really useful tool for this kind of work  :tu:

It's pretty.

Wonder if it's got any stories, but it looks like the damage before your worked on it was just cosmetic, so probably just a history of neglect and underuse.

That picture above was after grinding on the linisher/belt sander but before polishing
The axe had not been abused but I think they had been using a stone as a chopping block as it had an 1/8” thick ‘edge’ when I started  ::)

A mini ax would be a hatchet, so wouldn't a mini hatchet be like a meat cleaver? lol anyway looking good! JR

Here's my mini. :)

The scale's not great as it doesn't look all that small in this shot but, trust me, it is much lighter than your average hatchet.

Well that one is call the Wetterlings "mini axe".  It doesn't seem to be all that common these days and seems to now be going for nearly twice what I paid for it. :-\
