issues with terralux mod
on: December 01, 2012, 06:09:14 PM
I have a maglite AA with the terralux mod and the IQ switch. I have a had some trouble with it as of late. When I turn it on, it is dimmed and a little shake puts it back on full.

any idea what could cause it? I cannot seem to find anything wrong

i had the same thing, well still do, but i ditched the switch. the switch uses power and decreases the total amount of light that can be given off, so i just use it without it.. JR

You may need to clean the contact point of where it meets the body. Kinda hard to explain but I'll try. If you take the head off where the black plastic is, theres a tiny piece of metal that goes through to the body. You have to push the black piece apart to get it. I'll try to get some pics.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

FYI: the IQ switch is current limiting, even on max, and you are not getting the full output from your Terralux upgrade.

Don't get me wrong, I love the IQ switch, it was just designed with lower output LED's in mind. Or longer battery life...

thanks for the tip Dave, but that is a non issue for me. I just wanted to breath new life into the maglite till I got the ca$h for a better 200+ lummens light. Besides, it was a gift from someone who likes mags, so I cannot be caught not using it, at least periodically.

the issue is (I think) contact related, since I have to shake it for it to bright up to the max (switch permitting) brightness. I press the switch, and it looks like on la lower setting, I shake it and it brights up. I do not think the switch could be that bad?

I think that Steve is correct thinking that you are having a connection problem. Like he suggested, it is probably in the head. There are contacts going from the black plastic part (that the bulb inserts into) to the body. Contact cleaner may help cleaning it, as may turning and twisting it with batteries installed.
