Night shift workers
on: November 30, 2012, 11:28:01 PM
Anyone else here work nights? I usually do for 1/2 to 3/4ths of the year doing construction remodels. Last night was epic. Spent all night installing sensormatic security alarms on cash registers, built warehouse racking at two different stores 50 miles apart across hellish Houston morning traffic. Installed 8 Cisco wireless access points in the ceiling with a wobbley lift and tested the speed on both SSID broadcasts.

My body is going numb and yet my knees are hammered.  :P   Awesome overtime though. New boss doesn't care how many hours we put in..just get it done. Our ailing company is really putting forth a new effort to shed its old stale image.

I worked nights for most of my career and even now if there's a night shift it usually falls to me to do it.  Working nights can be hard, but the worst I ever had was a three or four month stretch where I worked three nights and two days each week.  My only time off was spent trying to adjust from one shift to another.

I did about 2 years straight when I was younger. Now that I'm older I don't do them any more.

Not currently, but a couple decades ago I did a four year stretch of weekend graveyard. Twelve hour shifts Fri, Sat, and Sun nights. Worked 36 hrs and was paid for 40 because the shift sucked.

By the time I was able to transfer to a regular day position the stress had caused my blood pressure to skyrocket. Once I was off the night shifts BP returned to normal. Never again....

Yes I work nights. I'm a shift worker, old school, 3 shift pattern, 7 on 2 off. Earlies is 0730-1400, lates is 1400-2200 and nightes is 2200-0730. I feckin hate nightes, getting ready for work when the rest of the family is getting ready for bed. Trying to sleep in the day during the summer is aweful. I speak to contractors on nightes who say they prefare doing permenant nightes and couldnt do constantly changing shifts like mine, I couldnt do permenant nightes tho, to each his own! Shift work does smurf with you physicaly and mentaly tho. I'v been doing shift work for 28 yrs, and extreme shifts for 18 of those. I'm knackered :surrender
It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Wholeheartedly agree re rolling 3 shifts - it really screws you over and I just couldn't get used to it.  I worked 2 shifts for years (morning and afternoon), then they changed to 3 shifts.  I lasted about 12 months and changed jobs to get away from the 3 shifts.  Never looked back  :)

I'd rather work nights anytime. I've always been a night owl. Being a redhead i don't like the brightness of midday Texas.  8)

Also just got off work..don't have to be back until next Wednesday night for Apple remodel.. :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :2tu: :2tu: :2tu: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

gonna be extra lazy today...then get some stuff done around the place. Beagle needs a long walk at the park. ::)

back on nights for the next seven weeks doing a custom remodel. we have to relocate the communication room with all new IS-IT equipment. That means running all new cat 6, fiber optics, backbone trunks, T1 lines ..the works. All without ever shutting the store down.

i was up on a lift all night running cables in the ceiling surrounded by teams of electricians. I used the knife on my charge to cut the p-touch tape for our new rack.

For most of my time here I worked either 11-7am five days a week or two of those mixed with three 3-11pms or 5-2ams.  I did work straight graveyards for 9 months once too.  It sucks and I never really acclimated to it.  I sure enjoyed the peace and quiet though.  If I wasn't a family man I would still be doing it, but having a happy little 4 year old jumping on you at 7:30am makes it hard to want to do anything overnight.
