New Marlin spike SAKs! Sailors
on: December 01, 2012, 05:58:17 AM
Check out Tim's (Felinevet) EDC store, two new limited Sailors:

http://www.edcsource.com/VICTORINOX-ORANGE-ALOX-SAILOR--Limited-Edition,name,114487,auction_id,auction_details
http://www.edcsource.com/VICTORINOX-BLACK-ALOX-SAILOR--US-NAVY-Limited-Edition,name,114488,auction_id,auction_details

Looks that Victorinox still has Marlin spike parts, although this time the back scales are new style with the engraving panel.

But Vic makes their product line such that you have to buy limited editions to get the cool colours and tools.  I'm just thankful that the Pioneer and Farmer are at least still in their catalogue.

My thoughts exactly, now if they put a fish scaler with it,it would of made more sense, and would definitely be a more useful tool, I think some of these limited runs are just a gimmick with fancy colour scales.
Rest is not idleness,
and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day,
listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky,
is by no means a waste of time

When did Victorinox issued Sailors knifes to the US Navy?

Well, the majority of the Marlin spike SAK models have the saw:

Sailor
Midshipman
First Mate

No saw:

Seaman
Pioneer 2223 (Sea Pioneer)

So a 3 to 1 score overall for saw versus no saw.

Why saw: think old wood tall ships. Why also the series caries names such as Midshipman and First Mate. Who has one of these on their boats today? On those just about everything (except the sails, what the Marlin spike supposedly is for) was either wood or rope and the saw can be used on both of those me thinks.

And no, those "US Navy" inscriptions look to me that are just for show, to look cool I guess. If it was not for a 2012 50 pieces Limited Edition series maybe I would think that US Navy has to do something with but like this is silly IMHO to think that a an actual relationship exists. A bit funny thinking this LE series was ordered by a Swiss person living in Switzerland, guess some US Navy nostalgia from movies maybe? I may be wrong.

IMO the "Long Rancher" does not count, it is not a standard Victorinox model.

And if the Long Rancher is to be counted, then let's count the US Navy Sailor too, both being Limited Editions manufactured by Victorinox, and the saw still wins :D

Shall we also separate models by colors? Still there would be more with saw than without.

Or should we also count the LE 1 piece runs of custom Marlin spikes? This may help the no saw camp :D but still won't be a majority without saw.

Would be interesting to know exactly how "US NAVY" ended up on the black one.  There is a bit of mistery there. Maybe some were given as gifts to personal friends in the US Navy (wild guess here) and what remains from that 50 pieces run is sold to the collectors community?

They have no connection with the us navy, but you don't have to tell your friends that. If they are smart enough to find the info on SAKWiki or this forum it's because they really want one and then it does not matter.

Thanks for confirming. What I thought about this when I saw it. It is a cool SAK nonentheless, free advertising for US Navy included but in a nice color combo and design, IMO. A bit like a designer's SAK piece.

And they both sold out already!

The saw & marlinspike was not only for sailors. An early Elsener catalogue from 1903 shows pics of his knives w/saws and sacking sewing needles (marlinspikes) for (farm) workers. See last page of his catalog.

"This tool is a descendant of the similar Victorinox tool, the Sacking Needle found on much earlier models. The 93mm Marlinspike appears a little more robust that the large sacking needle, and has very smooth curvature. The point of the Sacking-Needle is noticeably sharper (needle-sharp), than the rounded point of the Marlinspike."

This thread just gave me an idea of how to use up the pile of new fish scalers I have, and satisfy my want of a marlinspike.  Grind off the lower prong, and add a hole near the end... modded thin sacking needle! With built in ruler!  I'd probably have to make the other prong longer and pointier, but it would work. :D

i have a picture on a post it note describing some thing very similar, i think i even have a fish scaler with one prong blacked out with permanent marker.  I also thought it was a good idea to find some use for scaler and it can share the same layer as the saw....

being flat it wouldn't have the same stress resistance as the actual marlin spike but how many people are actually untying big knots with them anyways right?

Ya it was really just an idea to make use of a part that to me has zero value.  When I part out a swiss champ, i literally value it at $0.   I'll grind one tonight as a test.
