Unknown Old Timey VIC
on: January 06, 2013, 10:02:55 AM
I recently picked up this old timey SAK which seems to be a VIC.  Does anyone have any insight on this old codger?  She seems worse for wear, but maybe some TLC can fix her up.  Would it be a good idea to send her in to Vic to for a tune up?  Is it worthwhile?  What are some safe steps I can take at home to get her back up and running?

Better pics in a few weeks as I am in transit and so is she.

Cheers

After looking at it more carefully, it seems that the logo is slighly different that a vic one.  Hmmm, a antique counterfeit perhaps?  That is kinda neat actually!

Check the sixth page link there...that looks like yours. Looks like you found a real deal vintage Vic there.

You know, on second thought...it's a fake. Definitely a fake. Knock-off fake, worth pennies if that. Send it to me for proper disposal.  >:D

I love these random old knives... not unlike the Vic "junk" I found in my dad's garden rubbish!

So, are you going to try and restore it yourself? :)

It would be interesting to see the tang stamp on this one, for me it has more of a German look and feel to it.

Unfortunately this is not an actual Victorinox knife but an older clone. You see these pop up on eBay pretty regularly. I think they're from either from Italy or Spain, but I'm not sure on that at all.

The key is the can opener - Victorinox never made one in that style. Check out this page: http://victorinox.saam007.com/91mmtools.php and scroll down to can openers and you should be able to see what I mean.

I'm no speSmurfpillst but it really doesn't look like a Vic...never saw this kind of small blade replacing the can opener and from what I remember, this style of cap lifter/flat driver combo was made by Vic only in stainless... rivets and shield not standard too.

Pretty old looking knife, I wonder in what years those were made?

"Amefa" perhaps? It shows some resemblance. Looks like from the 60's.
I think the swiss shield is home carved?

Below is the full listing.  The vendor never claimed it was a Vic, but the "shadow" over the tang is very suspicious.  All in all though, I am only out $10 for the three knives, so no big loss.  Might even be salvageable.  Soak em in coke, wd40, or molasses for a spell.

When I get the knives and am back stateside (early next month) I'll try to get some better pics up.
