Wish they still made Alox like this ?
on: April 16, 2024, 04:43:28 AM
back before people were chasing colors on inferior knives. They don't make them today, like they once were. Early 80's Cadet II, Late 70's Electrician and a 66 Soldier. Only old Alox for me or no Alox at all.    :woohoo:

I agree, it’s a pity. Discontinued alox model are much cooler than new ones.

Pardon my ignorance @Swisster, but what is different about the new alox that makes it less worthy? Don't get me wrong, I love the old cross alox's, but because of the old school cross emblem, not because I see something different with the actual alox scales. Or has it more to do with the tool layout of some of the old discontinued models?

Impressive lineup @koke!  :like:

What's wrong with coloured SAKs and why are current Alox models inferior? That statement sounds pretty presumptuous to me.

Cheers,

Simon

I’m guessing the “superior” aspect may be referring to the slightly thicker, unpolished tools.

Personally, I do love the aesthetic of red old cross alox and it is a favorite. As far as other differences, the only one that matters to me, is the sharpened inside edge of the cap lifter. Wish they would have kept that.

I actually don’t love the unpolished tools, I find they typically have quite sharp edges on the nail nicks which makes it less comfortable to open. I do think the polish the driver tips too much on the new ones, but 10 seconds of work on a stone solves that.

Newer knives have a better steel formulation and heat treat so, in general, back springs will be less likely to break and knives have a slightly higher Rockwell hardness. I don’t think it’s much of an issue with the older ones, but not all the changes are necessarily bad.

One change I do not like is the thinner blade stock on the cadet and the use of a washer to compensate. Idk if it is functionally worse, but it is an eyesore.

I would be interested in some additional alox versions of some of the Cellidor models.

An alox Explorer or Deluxe Tinker (minus the back tools, of course)? Yes, please!

You can always get aftermarket metal scales for the cellidor models, like this Ti-scaled Huntsman…

I have a '67 Soldier and I agree 💯.  For a 57 year old knife it's still gorgeous and locks up tighter than anything else I have.
