How I Decided On A Midnite Manager
on: December 21, 2012, 07:55:02 AM
Christmas-and the new year- is closing up on us. I am 13 years old, and so I was out for a present, when I remembered Victorinox SAKs, which I was very interested in. There was a place called Notebook that sold them in a nearby mall, so I got in and asked questions about Vics and I looked at them. The first thing I realized was the high price tag, but that was due to where I live (Istanbul, Turkey). That day, I decided to buy a Spartan Lite. Afterwards, while surfing Vic's website, I thought Midnite Minichamp was very cool(LED is important to me).I was left in a dilemma, and I kept changing choices, mostly due to the pen that Midnite Minichamp had and Spartan Lite lacked. A day later(which was well, yesterday) I saw another Notebook store at another mall, and I decided to look at that place too. While looking at them, I saw Signature Lite, which had nearly everything I wanted:LED, a pen, scissors, and of course, a knife(I am 13 years old, so I don't have much uses for a SAK). It was a small one, still, I loved it. If I didn't surf the web that day, I would be getting a Signature Lite, but while browsing I saw the Midnite Manager. It came with a screwdriver/magnet/cap lifter thingy alongside everything Signature Lite had. Although it meant 11 dollars extra to the pricey(blaming my country) Signature Lite, it was definitely worth it(I will never use that wire stripper or whatever on that gadget anyway). I couldn't get it yet. However, I will,(I'll get a translucent red one) and I am sure that it will be top-notch quality. Once I grow up and have more uses for a SAK, I am going for a Swissschamp(normal and/or XAVT). I think I will make a collection as well. How did you get/will get your first SAK? I am up for interesting stories! ^^
That's all, bye! :salute:

Great story, I'm sure you will be very happy with your Midnight Manager.
I got my first SAK as a birthday present when I was 10 years old. I'm pretty sure my Dad picked it up in a second hand store, but I didn't mind at all as it was an old model tool chest.
I still have that SAK today, 40 years later. They really are a friend for life.

Earlier this year I retired it and gave it a total strip-down and rebuild with new brass liners and polished aluminiun scales.  It is now a "shelf queen" and is no longer used, but I always have a newer model SAK of some kind with me.

After 40 years of service...

Pirsak -  An old one, Wenger with dog-leg opener.  Converted broken small blade to - ?  NIce re-do.  Sell me the old (metal ?) scales ?
The Midnight Manager a good first knife TurkTeen.  Sharp !  Some day a SwissChamp will be most useful.
I got my first SAK from a sweet old maid friend of the family who brought a Victorinox for me and a Wenger for my brother back from a trip to Europe - 50 years ago.

The Midnite Manager is a grat first choice, and it has a couple of tricks up its sleeve the Signature lacks. Attach a lanyard to the keyring, or simply fold out the Philips screwdriver multitool thing, and you suddenly have something to give a better grip when using the knifeblade. The Rambler (and by extension the (Midnite) Manager), the Escort (though not all) and the MiniChamp are the only ones with either the keyring practically placed to use a lanyard as extra handle (i.e. keyring opposite to the blade) and/or use the Philips as a handle extension. These knives are far more capable than most people give them credit for.  :tu:

I don't remember when I bought my first SAK. I think I was about your age, give or take, I had gotten some money for Christmas, and by saving a little extra, I could afford a Wenger that was sold locally. The closest you get among the current offerings is the Classic 07, but the one I got didn't have tweezers and toothpick. Anyway, that knife served as my only SAK and very trusted EDC up until I had completed college. Then, as I started earning money with a regular job... let's say I have a few more knives more now in my late thirties. :)

Welcome to the forum TurkTeen.  I don't have the Midnight Manager myself, but it's one I've always liked the look of.

Great choice TurkTeen! I've got a midnight manager on my keychain, I love it.

As for my first SAK. My grandfather gave me one (a Spartan I think) when I used to go camping with him and taught me to whittle with it. I unfortunately don't still have it.  :(

Welcome! Great to hear about your First SAK adventure. I got started much later in life, but have made up for some of the lost time.  Just carry the SAK with you all the time and you'll be surprised how much you start to use it.

First off, welcome to the forums TurkTeen. We hope you enjoy your time here. Folks on these boards are more reasonable and helpful than most places on the net, in my opinion, so don't be shy about asking questions.

I'm 41, and just got my first swiss army knife last year. It was a Victorinox Tinker, kindly donated by boardmember JerseyDevil, so I could test and compare the can opener to other tools.

Since then, I have purchased a one-hand Trekker, and a Swisstool Spirit X, and won a Rambler in a give-away by Heinz Doofenschmirtz (spelling on that name might be off a tad) on these boards.

I have been very happy with the rambler, and have been considering a Midnite Manager. I think you will like ANY swiss army knife you finally decide on.

I'm very disappointed to hear the price issues you face. But in any case, let us know what you finally get.

Got a Midnite Manager yesterday. It is practically excellent. Unfortunately, the knife and the scissors are very small. But I am aware that this is a keychain tool(although I won't use it that way)  and this is actually the best way it can be done (unless you use a scissors/knife based tool, like LM Micra.).
Plus, no Gerber, Leatherman, Wenger, CRKT  or oher cool multitool brand is available in my country-except Victorinox. I also had a metal, brandless, heavy full-size army knife. I still have it.
Once I grow up and start to have an EDC(I'll be expelled if I bring this SAK to school and it is found.) , I will buy a Swisschamp. I also love the Swisschamp XAVT, but they should've found a way to install a compass. I wonder how big Wenger Giant is but I that's all interest I have in Wenger products.I liked Vic's Night Vision watch. I like the Micra, and it would be the next keychain-size tool I would buy. CRKT Tool is cool. Me and my multitool obession in a nutshell.:multi:
