New soldier question
on: December 19, 2012, 05:58:59 PM
Does anyone know if the new Vic Soldier is available with a plain edge blade? I'd buy one tomorrow if there was. I just dont like serrated blades in general, and that one in particular. It must be a right bugger to resharpen
It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Not stock, but there have been a number of special orders. A few people on the forum have ground the serrations off with a sharpmaker and a spare afternoon...

Personally I like the serrations, I carry this as my camping knife and the serrations deal with rope and twine very well, although it is getting a bit blunt.

There is a diamond serrated sharpener out there but, I forgot who makes it? Maybe Gerber?

It's not hard to sharpen, and appears to be a great blade design for most types of utility cuts.  However; as noted earlier, removing the serrations has been reported to actually be quite easy.  I recommend DMT diamond sharpener products, but really you could probably use a simple coarse stone on the Vic blade to remove the serrations and then touch it up on your favorite sharpener.

Well there is a plain edged OH Trekker isn't there? That's pretty much the same knife but with nylon scales so you could get that one instead? And maybe swap scales later on if you want the dual density ones.

Yeah scale swapping is probably easiest, I never liked the converted PE because the amount of removed metal makes the blade looks weird.

The SE is very easy to sharpen, get a triangular rod (like from sharpmaker), hold it to the angle of the grind with your fingers as guide and pull back and forth in a sawing motion, then deburr on the other side.

I'm basically sharpening my SE Forrester on my spydie sharpmaker like it was a plain edge. It gets sharp and I figure that in the end the serrations will wear down and it might end up being PE eventually. Untill then the serrations will do their thing. :)

I saw the Trekker, I'd be quite happy with that, not too bothered by the "military" type scales, its the knive/tool loadout that I'm after. Where did yot aquire yours from?

OK, so untill I can get my mitts on the Vic, I've just pulled the trigger on a Wenger Ranger 78, to err, fill the gap  I know, I know! I paid £32 for it, is that a good price?

The 78 is a beast!  You might fall in love with it, bigger, better lock, larger blade and saw.  What's not to love?
Lurking with a large collection of sharp knives!
