Bit of advice
on: December 27, 2012, 10:38:36 AM
I have some lithium based grease that I used to use for wheel bearings and I was wondering if this would be ok to use on the threads of a torch to help with waterproofing?

I prefer dielectric grease (silicone grease).  From my experience, lithium grease can dry and leave a crusty residue (and it can stain clothing).

For my limited torch use, I use light gun oil or nothing at all and Nextorch silicone grease for the sealing rings.

The rings should provide enough waterproofing and any thick grease just collects dust. Also when you change the batteries everything gets covered in grease...

A lot also depends on the torch, that is whether it has sealing rings everywhere, including behind the front glass, whether it is a "twisty" or clicky and how sealed the switches are, as well as the use (rain, swimming, diving..)

Proper waterproof torches will have a magnetic switch so that no water can go in through the switch.

The torch is just a humble itp a3 that I carry on my keychain

Going to get an sc600 when the new models out.

An itp should be waterproof enough; decent make.
