What is your dream custom SAK for EDC and use?
on: December 27, 2012, 10:47:14 AM
What is your dream custom SAK for EDC and use?

Imagine you could order your dream custom SAK from either Victorinox or Wenger directly.
The only limitation is that you should specify an existing frame (111mm, 108mm, 100mm, 93mm, 91mm, 84mm, 74mm, 58mm or Swiss card, even SwissTool or Spirit for Victorinox and 130mm, 120mm, 85mm or 65mm for Wenger) and order the frame specific tools in a reasonable coniguration. The companies should be able to use existing tools and frames and their assembly machines without any modification, but the choice of tools is all yours. One might order more than one SAK, such as a 111 for professional use, a 91mm for pocket carry and a 58mm for the keyring.
Yes, I know, we have our mods for that but it seems they have some limitations. Most specialize at a certain frame and the others don't get much attention. And they are limited to tools from cannibalized SAKs, where the companies are assumed to have unlimited access to tools.
Trying to conceptualize it, it seems that one way is to choose a feature- rich SAK (such as Swisschamps, including XLT and XAVT) and start removing undesirable tools in order to deduct the perfect SAK. But there should be other ways also. For 111 and 93mm SAks, one might have to add layers in order to get what he desires. Feel free to offer your ideas.
I hope Mr Elsener reads our forum from time to time. If he does he might get ideas from the accomplishments of our mods, or threads like this one (provided there will be good feedback; the spirit of Christmas might help us dream, so I'm optimistic about it).

my dream sak (which i intend to build over the weekend) is a stripped cybertool 34.

- replace the small blade with the vic combo tool (bottle/can opener)
- remove the pliers
- remove the can opener
- remove the bottle opener

i believe in this configuration the hook and the awl on the back would be eliminated also (never use them anyways). the corkscrew can stay.

You minimalists! Is there any other greedy creature around except me?

On the other hand, maybe I now know the reason you have dozens and hundreds of SAKs and I only have a handfull!

Oh sure, I've got much bigger ones with more layers, but for EDC I like to keep it a little lighter.

I've got an XAVT, but that never ends up in my pocket

How is the no liners working out?  Are they really necessary?

I really like my Alox Electrician, but I do miss scissors, as well as the toothpick and tweezers.  I also really like the Compact too as it has so much versatility in a two layer format.  It's just missing an awl and a small sheepsfoot blade, both of which the Electrician has.  Basically, I would like a combo of those two SAKs.  I would like it to be based from the Electrician, with scissors added and handle scale tools made possible in the Alox.

If you look closely, you will see that there are liners. These are the thin Cadet liners not those that can be found in the 84mmcellidor models.

My ideal EDC SAK needs toothpick & tweezers so Alox is out (or is it?)
Make it 84 mm.  Blade and combi-opener (which has straight & phillips drivers on can/bottle opener) backed by corkscrew, scissors backed by long nail file, scales hold T & T and pen and pin (replaced by needle) and 58mm-style LED.  Some kind of disappearing lanyard ring for ladder work but pocket carry.
In other words, the old Golfer w/ Plus scales and LED light and magic lanyard loop.
And does anybody know whether Carl Elsener does read this forum?  Or Peter Hug of Wenger?

I started this thread and I can't make up my mind about the perfect SAK. I thought that it would be as simple as this: start with XLT or XAVT and then remove some tools. But I don't have the nerve to remove (almost) anything!

For me I think the perfect SAK would be something close to the one shown in my profile pic. Old style red alox scales, old style heavier blade and tools, small blade in lieu of awl, scissors, brass liners.

For 93mm I would start with a Red Alox/ silver cross with keyring and the tools of Harvester. I would add another serrated blade. Victorinox doesn't offer the blade I want; a sheepfoot like the one Leatherman uses would be perfect. A matching firesteel would hung from the lanyard and I would use the saw's back to produce sparks.
I don't see scissors and pliers functional for working with flora and wood but I'd like a fifth layer, only I can't make my mind. A metal file/saw maybe?

For a big outdoors SAK I would start with a Wenger Ranger (Blaze or Green camo) 120mm and I would just add the sheepfoot serrated blade from the Mike Horn knife.

My perfect work EDC SAK would be/will be when I make the Duke of Yeoman, basically a Yeoman, but with the back tool Phillips as well as the inline.

Still deciding on wether to use a normal main blade,or the DofE butter knife, and wether to use Plus scales,or wooden ones
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

ATM my dream would be a smaller Spirit, with lowride pocketclip, OHT spearpoint blade, second utility blade, a gippier handle surface, and a splinterpicker.

Another would be based on the 74mm Executive, with alox scales holding TTP&P and the philipsbeer tool.

Dream on about a titanium Swisscard, with high-end magnifier, flashlight, mirror and firestriker.

One for the woods- A Hunter XT with a file added, wearing red nylon scales, no T&T.

For in town- Golfer with a backside phillips (yes, I know about the torque, light duty only) and plus scales.

For dressing up- as above, with jimping and dress scales.

Sure!

At work I deal with a lot of recessed Philips screws,so it's handy to have different lengthed drivers

I would have a "Senior Mechanic" made.
For EDC I prefer 3 layers and have scissors in the Rambler on my Keychain.
So what I'd like is a Blade/Combo layer;a Pliers layer and a Mag-Phillips layer.
Backlayer tools would be awl and corkscrew.
It would look like this but with the newer magnifier in the Mag-Phillips layer.

I'd modify the Ranger Model SAK...  I'd add the "PLUS" scales w/the pen, I'd love to see a way of adding a mechanical pencil too.

I'd like the tool for breaking glass (often found on rescue knives), and a rare-earth magnet for getting those pesky ferrous metal items that inevitably roll under things that are too big to move to retrieve w/o a magnet.  I found a way of "adding" a magnet...  Nesting it in the bottle opener, but make it fit smoothly was my problem.

I'd love to figure out how to make the corkscrew screwdriver be reversible (with phillips and standard head drivers)

If you can't fix it with duct tape, a hammer, a screwdriver, bailing wire, zipties, or a Swiss Army Knife, it's broken and irreparable.
