Looking for multitool for screws and bolts ...
on: December 29, 2012, 02:33:33 PM
Hi multitool.org

For my job at a brewery i sometimes have very small and fast fixes to do at the production line and i don't carry any tools.
I'm talking about loose bolts and screws so i need a tool that fits in the knee pocket and has a flat and Phillips head screwdriver, Allen keys as much as possible and preferable socket wrench(s) like a 8, 10, 13 or suitable pliers ... Most awesome would be a adjustable wrench

Does this exist?

Thanks alot, greetings from Belgium!

Does one tool exist with all of that?  Nope.

However, you can get just about all of that with a small combination of tools.  Most tools on the market will accommodate a number of different screws, but to get Allen keys you are going to have to look at bike tools, which generally fall down on other "everyday" type tools.

Since you didn't mention needing saws, files or scissors I would suggest something like the ByrdRench which gives you a variety of screwdriver bits (and you can swap them out if you need different ones since it takes standard bits), an adjustable wrench, a decent knife, pliers and the ability to use the wrench and screwdriver independently of eachother.

Add in a small bike tool like the Topeak Mini 9 and you should have most of what you need covered.  There are larger bike tools available with more Allen wrenches but I think if you want to go that route you are probably better buying one of those fold out key sets from any local hardware store, similar to this Stanley model.

For sockets I think you'd be best off getting an actual portable socket set.  There are ways of using a socket set with multitools (SOG has an adaptor available, and Victorinox offers a very nice small ratchet) but the real issue with socket wrenches is the sockets themselves.  If you can't make do with the adjustable wrench then you are better off getting an actual small socket set.

Welcome to the forum- feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

Thought so that this epic tool did not exist :D yes i dont need a saw or blade just need to tighten screws and bolts thats it.
Maybe i'll look into a bike tool and a small adjustable wrench. But it all needs to fit in my pocket for walking around the production line all day.

Thanks for the fast reply.

Not a Multi Tool per se, but i think this set:

http://www.wera.de/catalog_index_de.html?&no_cache=1

http://www.wera.de/presse2.html?&tx_ttnews[year]=2011&tx_ttnews[month]=09&tx_ttnews[day]=01&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=524&tx_ttnews[backPid]=29&cHash=081d4c3fc952c37421dfdc06884220a8

(Wea Tool check)

Will cover the needs you mentioned. It will fit into a cargo Pocket.

I would argue strongly for either the Leatherman Charge ALX with bit kit.  It covers both standard and metric Allen's (plus a few other odd ball bits too)

haha, well i work at the bottling plant and the machines are from the 70s and 80s so need constant fixing and adjusting.
I hate waiting for the shiftleader or mechanic to bring me tools so id love to carry some multi tool with me. atm i only have a knife and a metric 13 wrench that i found in the trash :D

Im really looking for a portable solution with adjustable wrench as i don't want to destroy the bolts with a plier.

I dreamt tonight of a wrench which folded open and had a bit holder inside and all the bits next to it ... but i'll guess ill never see that, or i'd have to make it myself by welding it all together  :ahhh or have a pocket full of loose tools that go cling, chuka, cling, chuka, cling all day

There is the Cattleman MT   , cheap & pretty well put together

The shifting spanner only goes too 10mm & the tool bits are an odd size 5mm.
The pliers end does open too 21mm.

Bob did a review, the photos came from there, here it is ----> http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,24809.msg451488.html#msg451488

Cool but the bit is too short, couldn't get it anywhere near a screw. and i clearance for 13m bolts

Made a quick photoshop of what would do.

OMG i found the perfect bit driver but they only take orders from 25 pieces
Quality looks #@$% but for work its fine

Wera Tool-Check - Hommel Hercules

http://www-de.wera.de/uploads/media/Wera_Tool-Check.jpg

As good as the idea might seem, the Screwdriver with the hollow handle will most liekly be very cheaply made - There are, however, well made examples of similar construction, Carolus Maximus, Wera Kraftform and others, but the pictured example is not well constructed.
If a tool like that fulfills your need, I´d buy a well made handle from a well known maker and add screwdriver blades as you need, a 1/4" adapter and the most used socket sizes or an adjustable spanner.

With tools you usually get what you pay for.
In my shop, i started with cheap (not the cheapest of the cheap), rebranded hardware store stuff or special offers and did replace the single pieces when the chep ones were worn out or i used tehm really often.
I would advise against this technique when it comes down to tools you use everyday. The stuff should be reliable, so buy the best you can afford. You can save by only buying what you need, but don´s try to save at the toosl you buy.

BTW: I stumbled across a Bike MT that might fit your bill, it´s a Topeak tool:

There are screwdrivers, allen keys up to 8 mm, a small blade and hex keys up to 15 mm.
I´ll have a look if i find out the name...

And btw:

This "Auto Tool" would fit the bill too, imo if it was built better.

Just to give you ideas what type of Multitools are floating around...
And i like the Adjustable wrench/foldout tool idea.

There is the vintage French made SeaBoard Steel   :D

You would need a bit driver as well though  .
You can get cheap & nasty versions of the SeaBoard Steel

yeah i know the bit holding screwdriver looks like cr*p but its a neat idea and has everything inside it. Found another online offer for a 13bit holding high quality driver but they don't ship to Belgium :( bad luck again.

and omg that wera tool-check is awesome, they also have bit holding drivers but 2 or 3x expensive but i bet they last a lifetime.

What about a Loggerhead Immix?

this solves your socket/adjustable wrench issue, then you could carry a bike tool with the Allen wrenches and some screwdriver bits and pretty well be set.

As for what you have pictures with the adjustable wrench with the tools folding out of the handle, there are lots of those on the market but I would avoid all of them if I were you as they pretty well all seem to be made in the cheapest factories in China out of the cheapest steel and with the least quality control imaginable.  You'd be much better off with an actual adjustable wrench and a screwdriver set than to try one of those.

There's also the Cool Tool from Gerber which might get reasonably close to what you want:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,4956.0.html

However they are amazingly popular with the bicycling crowd and were discontinued in the 90's and so might be a bit hard to find and possibly is a bit expensive when you do.

I stopped looking for the perfect multi-tool, it just does not exist ... yet :)

Best would be a good bit holding driver and a adjustable wrench.

Thanks for all the help so far!

I'm in Belgium ;)

I also Like the charge AL suggestion with all the alan keys you could need.

there are some smaller sets like these two, that you could perhaps customize with the sockets you want.

If you decide to get anything from the US, I would be glad to pick it up and ship it to you.

Something like this may be suitable for bolts. http://www.kobratools.com/socketpro/

They also have ratcheting adjustable wrench now, but I have no experience with them.
