Another one from the little Red Dot
on: January 11, 2013, 05:32:18 PM
Hello everybody, I'm Henry from Singapore, posted a few threads on this great site before I saw this new members forum.
If anybody's wondering why we use the term "the little Red Dot" to describe our country, thats because a politician from one  of our neighboring countries tried to gain votes, by berating us with that description, when relationship between our two countries were not so cordial. Politicians from neighboring countries used to  love using Singapore as a punching bag to garner votes. Everythings cool now, but "the little Red Dot" stuck.
This is truly a great site, tons of information and very interesting mods that makes me feel like trying my hands on tweaking for my personalized Edc as well.
though I have been a user of Leatherman tools for a very long time, since I was given a Wave by my former boss. I have grown to rely on them a lot, at work as well as at home. little did I know that there was such a large cohort of multi tool afficiandos.
I now have a small collection of mts (mostly Leatherman) since my first Wave, and have been using a Charge Tti as my EDC until about a month ago when I managed to bag an OHT from eBay for quite a decent price. I think the seller wasn't too happy about the lack of bids for his auction.
Anyway,
Thanks everybody for all the interesting topics and especially Grant Lamontagne for making it all possible.

Welcome aboard, Henry.  As Taxi Dad says, we are a friendly, helpful lot here (although sometimes a bit too helpful when it comes to helping other people to spend money on MTs)  ;)

Greetings to you too J=sews  :salute: :salute:, been using the OHT as my EDC for about a month now, like it, feels sturdy, solid and comfortable holding it. The shorter blades and saw is a non issue and the spring loaded plier is a plus :tu: however I do miss some tools from the Charge like the bit driver, file and scissors, I do use them quite regularly.

Are there restrictions there in Singapore about locking tools Henry? I know they pretty much have a fine for anything  Even the Formula One drivers have to get special licensing for their helmet visor tear offs  (totally MT or knife related)

Hi stealth007s  :salute:, its not that bad actually, as long as you're a civil minded person, the fines wont find you. It's not so obvious now, but there was a period when the authorities deemed it  neccessary to erect signs that state the the amount of fine for a specific wrongful act, for instance "NO SMOKING in this area fine $$$$$", or "STATE LAND tresspassers will be fined $$$$$" and so on and so forth. That's how The joke about Singapore being a "Fine" country came about.
Afraid I don't have any idea regarding the helmet visor tear offs but I believe it's more a safety issue then anything else.
As for restrictions on EDC's, there is no law that states that it is illegal, I have been carrying one for many years without once being questioned. But a colleague of mine was once checked on our MRT, which is your subway, and warned that it is illegal to carry a MT on public transport, so it's still a pretty gray area. Problem is, Singapore is a city state and people do not actually have the practice of carrying MT's, unlike your country where it is your culture. Here, I am one of a very very small minority.  :D
