nice work man!  how did you "splice" the pivots?  did you cut the head off of a bolt and thread/loctite two pivots together in the middle?

Not going to make this a sticky as it's following one tool and it's not a general "how to" guide :)

No, that's would be a waste of a bolt!

I cut a tube in half, the trimmed it flush an to length on my lathe. Then I screwed the bolt all the way through. Then I screwed in another 1/2" tube onto the exposed threads and then spun the whole thing on a lathe again polishing it with a band of 400 grit.

It results in stationary pin and a screw you screw into.

hmm, would you then have to take the whole pivot out if you wanted to change a tool on the stationary side?  i guess its no big deal if you dont plan on changing tools much.  i'm not trying to criticize.  Either way its very nice work and i enjoyed all the pictures, so thanks for posting.

just curious, what was the final length of your pivot?  i remember the 1/"2 pivots worked out prefect for me, but i was using keys that were wider than the tools and the LED was wider than the keys. then i had to space them out even wider to make all the scales flush with each other.

i can go check for myself later, but i'm guessing the 1/2" pivots are long enough if someone wanted to make a 4 layer squirt with just leatherman tools?

It may need a TINY bit of trimming. I just measured a standard PS4 and it's just under 1/2" to the outside of the scales.

Half of the fun is documenting and sharing. I am a huge fan of doing it yourself and learning. You can pay anyone to do anything, but you are never satisfied until you do it yourself.

Damn! Shape ways is estimating me Feb 12 before the stainless steel and plastic ones show up.

I am tempted to just order a set of detail plastic ones and see the fit, they will show up much sooner than the other ones and would cost about $3 per scale plus shipping.

On an unrelated note...this project reminded me of a find...behold! The Monster 58...

Also was bored before bed so I swapped out the custom aluminum bead I made for my modded Juice S2 onto the Splash.

Even more bad news. The bottom wall of the hex driver hole is too thin. The model got rejected. I have a credit now but I need to edit the model and resubmit.

I might as well wait for the plastic ones come in, ensure the fit and then edit the models for a full stainless set of scales.

I carry a Squirt (older P4) on my keyring, great minitool, but the work you do to it is outstanding.
Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed it.

Thanks Wootz! The P4 is so close for me, I swapped out the smaller parts from a P4 into a PS4 and replaced the file. Great small package.

EDIT, some early morning CAD.

Changed the Scales to have a more support wall above the scale for 1.5mm more grip on a hex bit. The bottom has been dropped out all together and added a lip for the chamfer on any hex bit to stay rest on.

The end is going towards where the pliers close, so the spring action of the pliers will hold it in, as well as teh compression from holding the tool.

I am going to see about hollowing it out or chamfering the ends so that it's less material to use.

I can't wait for the day we share CAD plans online and program our own milling machines to build them at home.  Just hope I live that long.

What about a latch like the MUT has? I guess it wouldn't really need it though since all the pressure would be on the opposite end from the driver to force it closed as well as the compression from the pliers.

Yah overkill. This is more of a light use proof of concept. I figure the compression from the backspring a to keep it close and held and the strength from the user gripping the Squirt.

Some more revisions to the hex driver and regular side scales.

On the left is no scallops, just a scoop for access to the smaller tools. Next to that is more of a 'mech' design with a bevelled cutout and a row of holes all to remove material to have it cost less). Next to that is a cartesian cut out and finally on the end is a angled scallop cut. Going to go with the far right side angled scallop. Just need to make sure the pivot holes line up on the plastic ones that are coming in the mail on the 10th.

For those of you who are interested in seeing it in rotating 3D:

and the Scissor and Regular Universal Scale. (I call it Universal because you could fesiable use 3 of them as regular scales in addition to the scissor one).

Complexity doesn't effect pricing. It's all done by a robot, it's all about VOLUME. The cut outs and scoops reduce the total volume, reducing the total cost.

It's only a matter of a couple of $'s at this point, but who cares! CUSTOM SQUIRT SCALES!!!

I agree, the link between production cost and selling price is a very minor one.  Most prices nowadays are based on what the market will bear, however costs are the most popular justification for higher prices.

The hex one are about 3.5mm and the other scales are 2mm.

Oh! I am talking literally volume! As in the physical amount of material used to create the scales.

I talked to my fave seller on eBay and asked if she has a bunch of broken ones. Bingo, average of $4 each. Since they are coming apart and I have scales designed and can be manufactured as needed, no sense saving them.
