Gerber wharncliffe blades
on: January 15, 2013, 10:34:31 PM
So as most of you know a huge chunk of the Gerber multi tool line has wharncliffe blades. To me this is a bit of a deterrent  for buying Gerber tools as I prefer more traditional blade types. So I was wondering why Gerber does this? In my opinion a blade with a curve is a better all around multipurpose blade. Does Gerber do this to make their multitools look "cool" or is there some genuine reason I'm not seeing?

I think it is more of a "tradition" for them.

Also it looks less threatening, maybe.

I have to agree about the less threatening alternative rather than them going for something that looks cool. It gives the blade more of a tool feeling than a combat feeling imo (and I think a lot of non knife people would see it the same way as well).

They are simpler to sharpen as well, no need to try and sharpen any curves.  Also as the tip is much lower it is good for scoring across surfaces, i.e you can hold the whole MT at a lower angle relative to the work piece and still dig the tip in.  I just wish they would do less combo edges.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

That is true but with most of the one hand opening pliers the blades can only be accessed from the inside. Because the inside opening tools place the knife on the top handle when opened, you need to angle it down sharply to cut the material because there is a handle under the blade. This defeats the purpose of being able to be held low as you said and is bad engineering on Gerber's part. I agree on the easier sharpening and your right,Gerber should make less combo edge blades!

I agree. I'd be more open to this style blade if it was just a plain edge compared to a combo edge.
