Micra question
on: January 18, 2013, 12:56:43 AM
I have never owned or handled a Micra and was wondering about getting one. I probably would have gotten one by now, but pliers are something I want. So I was wondering how easy it would be to put some little pliers from a swiss army knife in the micra handle? I know I might need to sacrifice a few tools for this, but is it even possible?

Possible... maybe. Not the pliers from a 91mm SAK, though. They're almost as big and heavy as the entire Micra.

Seriously consider the Squirt PS4. You get both pliers and scissors. I've tested those scissors right alongside the Vic Rambler, and they're just as good.

However... setting that all aside. The Micra is an excellent tool. Besides the fairly disappointing tweezers, it's full of great stuff, and the drivers in particular are very robust for a tool of this size. I'm also a fan of the clean stainless steel look. They are incredibly durable little tools.

The Micra is about an inch shorter than the SAK pliers so that can't be done.

I had also thought about a Micra with a plier head and scissors from a Style PS installed, but the plier head on the Style is much wider than the scissors head of the Micra, and even if you could stretch out the opening on the Micra's pivots, you would lose internal tool slots doing it. I don't see that as a win.

A ps4 would probably be a better option, but my modding urges are tingling (that didn't sound weird at all!) I really like the look of the Micra but I probably will end up getting the ps4 (at least for now) There is just something I like about the micra that the ps4 doesn't do for me. Whatever, I can almost guarantee it won't be long before I have both!

What the Micra does for me that the PS4 doesn't is that the Micra has stainless steel finish, instead of those crappy anodized aluminum scales. If they fixed that on the PS4, I'd LOVE that tool, instead of it still being on my 'eventually' list.

So far, the Micra is just an expensive pair of scissors to me, but I'm new. Maybe I'll see some redeeming qualities and a reason to carry it some day.

I actually like the scissors on my Juice.  The scissors on the Charge are small, but not unusable either.

It USED to be that the best scissors in the industry (IMO) were the SOG Crosscut. With their quality slipping, the Micra/Style CS are at the top, now.

Scissors are THE main tool I use, and the first determinant on what tool I carry.

Aside from the scissors on the Micra, the blade is a fine little cutter. Same chisel ground edge as on the Crosscut, which held for 15 years for me without sharpening. The cap lifter works, if not being the best in industry. The flathead and phillips on the Micra outshine their scale, in my opinion. They are both super solid, and are more robust than you might imagine. File is... acceptable. It's a nail file. The fine flathead, with a little work, is great for eyeglasses. As someone whose lost lenses on glasses in the past, I need a tool that has this ability. The tweezers are not great, but I think I can count the total number of times I've needed tweezers when away from my house on one hand.

Keep in mind both the Wave and Charge are about 4 times heavier than a keychain tool. if you need a heavier toolset, that's fine. And while the Wave scissors cut well, they are pretty unwieldy, connected to half a pound of metal.
