How do nylon scales wear?
on: January 18, 2013, 12:39:55 AM
Curious as to how the nylon scales wear compared to the cellidor scales? Also, do nylon "plus" scales exist?

Would love to see some photos of your older, beat up nylon scaled Vics if you have any.

As for durability, they are better. I have never seen a broken nylon scale on a Vic. That's why they are used on the 111mm range, designed for hard use. I don't think there are any commercial nylon plus scales. Though I think Rotokid made some in the past. They have the Vic shield painted on, and it will rub of eventually.

Unbreakable I think, but not very scratch-resistant I'd expect.

The nylon scales I have are very scratch resistant IMO.

Were it not for the lack of inlaid shield , I'd much prefer the Nylon/Eco scales . They ware very well , and gain a certain dignity with age .

For many years , I carried an Eco. scaled Huntsman on the clip on my tool pouch .

I have a nylon handled red Recruit that I purchased in 91 or 92 and used heavily since. This SAK was more than abused. The painted shield is worn off but the scales are in great shape, with just few superifcial scratches. They still contain the original T&T!

No warping (like the Cellidor scales tend to do after a while, starting to separate from the liners), no deep scratching, no chips, no broken parts.

IMHO nylon wins no contest over Cellidor for actual use and resistance. Cellidor just looks nicer (when new, that is) and the inlaid metal shield is much more beautiful than the embossed printed (cheap) one on the nylon scales.

I agree with previous posts that the nylon scales are more durable. I like the slight texture too. The only downside seems to be the lack of the inlaid shield. The stamped or printed shield does tend to wear off.

One thing I noticed with my nylon Climber is there is no pin hole.  I don't know how recent this SAK is but that is a showstopper to me.

The nylon (polyamide) is called Grilon® IIRC.
