Screw Thread

I have never read a screw thread note before, can someone tell me what each of the numbered parts are?

Pretty sure that 1/2 is diameter in inches.

8 is the bolt size, and UNC is coarse thread which equates to 32 threads per inch on a #8 bolt; http://www.engineershandbook.com/Tables/uncunfthreadsperinch.htm

My brain will explode if I try to figure out what 3alh means.  The closest I could find is that ALH is a Volkswagen diesel engine code.  But thats probably not what you are looking at.

I have to go soak my head in a bucket of ice now.

Good luck.

3A refers to outside threads(class 3 used for closer tolerances) and Left Hand threads.

Is this a thread about screws, screw threads, thread-screws, or is someone saying "screw this thread?" :ahhh

I'm not that familiar with UNC as generally I come across BSW & ISO threads. I would have said:

1/2" Diameter, Unified Course thread form at 8 threads per inch, Class 3A (defines tolerances) Left Hand ... however 8TPI doesn't sound right for 1/2" diameter  1" diameter, yes maybe - I'd have expected more like 18 TPI at 1/2" ... so maybe I'm missing something

1/2 UNC is 13TPI,  1" uses 8TPI

1/2-8  would look more like an auger than a thread :)
