MUT and MUT/EOD at US Cavalry
on: January 21, 2013, 09:42:50 PM
Hello folks, I'm new at this forum and now I need some help.  Firstly, I find the MUT/EOD version demonstrated at US Cavalry a bit strange:  http://www.uscav.com/productinfo.aspx?productid=20691&tabid=548
Is this a prototype or some early production? Hint: 2 screws in the plastic filler under the carbon scraper. There are also other things, like the missing locking latch.
Secondly, I am a bit disappointed of my new MUT/EOD. Had never imagined a tool of this caliber would consist of any plastic parts. When my tool arrived, the driver bit retainer (the biggest of the plastic parts) was crushed. So now the tool is shipped back to LM via our national channels. Anyone else had any problems with the plastic parts of their MUTs?

First welcome to MTO :salute:

I didn't see anything different in the USC images  The lock latch is there and the screws are stainless instead of BO  As for the plastic parts, what would you have done differently  Too bad to hear that yours was crushed, but that's what the warranty is for I guess

Same video that's on the LM MUT page. It was the first generation MUT.

*edit- There's actually a lot that's different about that tool from what's on the shelf today

Ahh. Thanks. Not many produced of this first generation then?
May need to send my PST II also for some warranty rebuild. Its an 1195/0296 with broken points of the plier and a broken screwdriver after many years of use and abuse.
Is there any leather sheath for the MUT? I have a TripleK magazine pouch which seems to do the job, with some shaping thou.

Not sure about the production numbers on that one.

Landroza (a member of the forum) makes MUT holsters. Here's a link to the thread.

Sent the MUT/EOD on friday, a week ago. Received a completely new MUT/EOD in the post today. And even with a new brown nylon sheath and sight wrench. Well done, Wenaas Sport & Fritid, Leathermans norwegian rep.  :tu:

The new MUT has a handle (knife/saw side) that doesn't "lock" up against the plier in open position. Due to this, only the handle swings when trying to open the plier. The other handle indexes perfectly towards the plier.
Tried tightening the screws, improved slightly, but no felt indexing. Also lost the one-hand operation of the blade and saw with the screws tightened.
Is there a way to adjust to achieve the indexing function of the handle/plier link?
I know that the plier pivot may be a bit tight in a new tool, but since one of the handles totally lacks the indexing function there might be a fix for this  ???

Sorry to hear you are having problems with this Mut too 175GD :(  From your description, it sounds like the one handle is not "wedging" when in the fully open position..?

Correct, J-sews. It it this wedging function that needs to be tightened up. Impressed that you managed to understand my norwenglish  :salute:
I  think I then should remove the plastic part and give the handle a blow with a hammer?
But I guess it isn't the softest steel they have used here?
Zed: I know LM would correct this for me, but it seems to be such a minor issue that I should be able to correct it myself.
Can anybody tell which diameter blasting caps the MUT is designed for? I know other LM tools with crimper has had some problems with european 7mm blasting caps. I haven't tried crimping blasting caps yet with the MUT.

Not to worry about your english 175, it is superb. :salute:

I would try the hammer trick, only be very careful. Perhaps try using a hammer and punch for better control? The face of the "punch" should be rounded somewhat, so it will not leave a deep scratch.

Do you have anything like that at hand?

Yes, I think I could use a brass punch and place the MUT on a mini anvil. Thanks for your advice.

Brass is a great idea! Good luck, and let us know how it goes :)

As regards the cap crimper, I have no idea. Blasting caps are not generally available here, and I have never seen one. As a matter of fact I did not even realize they are made in different sizes  :-\

Not typically in different sizes. The caps we use in the military are all the same size.

Tried the hammer trick. But material is too "springy". Will let LM have the tool back to have it corrected.
