The file type also plays an important factor, and which the tool owner prefers to use. Myself, has to be a crosscut on one side and a diamond dust on the other - or it is wasted space.

Since I carry a multitool that has my preferred file types combined with a decent saw, I have no need for them on a knife. Would much rather have something that my multitool does not have, filling in the missing links.

Unfortunately getting what the owner wants on each tool type is by far the most difficult since everyone has different wants and needs. And manufacturers always seem to not understand what the people (or you) want.

I went with the file.

I've never once needed to use the saw on a sak. I don't use the file all that often either but at least it's seen some use. :)

Guess I have to change my previous opinion on this as I have a metal file/saw on my Yeochamp, rather than a wood saw.  I like the SAK metal file/saw though as it's a bit different from the Leatherman files with its pointy tip, which can lead to other uses that the LM files don't have.  The saw is the saw, regardless of whether it's on a MT or SAK (imho of course).

Funny thing is, a metal file is a high priority of mine on a MT, but much less so on a SAK.  It's not that I've never used a file on a SAK, heck I even built my own Clipper as I really thought I'd use it....and yet it's seen very little use and my saw based SAKs get all the pocket time.

How about one blade holder, and a slot in the handle to hold another blade.  So you can carry metal and wood cutting blades on you.  Ive toyed with the idea but havent prototyped it yet.  There are so many jigsaw blades available that it seems like a good idea to me, so long as the holder layer was as thin as a standard saw layer.

Both, because that metal saw makes a great woodsaw for fine work; it cuts a smooth edge and doesn't splinter the wood.

I prefer the metal file. I'm always misplacing my good files when working in the garage. I'm ALWAYS needing a metal file. When I'm camping I might prefer the wood saw. I've used the saw in the past to cut saplings or branches use as walking sticks when out hiking, or to use as as a pole for my tarp. But on an everyday carry, I definitely want a metal file.

To that end... which Wenger knives came with a metal file?

Charles.

On a SAK? Woodsaw. It's an outdoors knife and tool. I need it to do outdoors stuff. The metal saw on my mountaineer is cool but won't help as well when camping or hiking where i need wood to be cut for shelter or fire. If I'm working with metal I'm probably in the house or a garage, where I will have more dedicated tools for that

Both!  :like:

I can't vote. The saw is useful for wood and plastics - in fact I used it yesterday at work to cut both materials - and I use the file to smooth sharp metal edges that I always seem to encounter. The metal saw is great for cutting nails, which you can file afterwards with the same tool. Hard splintery wood, likewise. The file also makes short work of taming sharp toenails. :)

Nice thread necromancy!

I gotta throw my vote in for the metal file. I to think of myself as an outdoorsy adventurer type who would have lots of use for a woodsaw (and I am somewhat, just not as much as I would like). However most of the time I am just using the metal file on my CT41 to smooth out a rough spot on my nails or the tip on it to dig some dirt out from under my nails.

I voted Metal file. Now strictly the saw is much more useful out in the countryside. But the question was which you prefer? That's the metal file every time for me because like GoatDragon says you can use it for more than metal.

Well, for me, both. Especially the diamond file is an important tool since I also use it to re-humanize my bitten finger nails  :D :D :D
And the wood saw... Well, SAK and LM saws work incredibly well, I love having them in my pocket when needed.

Metal File for me. Always liked that tool.
I only wish it came without nail cleaner tip (like Wenger used to make) as I don't like manicure features on regular SAKs (have my 58mm for that).

How about a blade holder and hollow handle that fits a few blades.  Could have one for metal and wood.  It's one of the ideas kicking around but seeing as not alot of people want any saw at all I dotlnt know if it's worth the R&D investment.  Maybe 15% of builds I do have saws.

What would a blade for metal or a blade for wood look like if they were not saws?
