I agree Def. I am seeing Star Wars all over the place these days. I think Walt Disney is killing the brand personally.

That and I feel sorry for any Star Wars collectors out there.

I think George Lucas did that years ago.

I personally detest Disney but I have to say they seem (so far) to be treating the brand with more respect story wise than I would have given them credit for. As far as marketing etc goes they're no worse than all the other companies these days.

I've just read that the new film passes the Bechdel test which is a first for SW. A step in the right direction IMO

The Bechdel Test, sometimes called the Mo Movie Measure or Bechdel Rule is a simple test which names the following three criteria: (1) it has to have at least two women in it, who (2) who talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man. The test was popularized by Alison Bechdel's comic Dykes to Watch Out For, in a 1985 strip called The Rule. For a nice video introduction to the subject please check out The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies on feministfrequency.com.

I will disagree with you on the George Lucas statement.

Seriously, I saw Star Wars makeup amongst  all sorts of useless Star Wars kitsch. Oh also saw a Star Wars toaster. Argh!

:imws:
I think the franchise was almost killed 20 years ago by Lucas with Jar Jar and his silly midichloriens ans whiny Anakin...

I love the Disney marketing, I love seeing the hype, people being excited again for Star Wars, kids wanting a robot or a lightsaber. Plus I think JJ Abrams is a great director, passionate about this...
I hope the new SW is at least marginally good to make the wait worth for the fans and help a new generation of kids, to dream about the stars...

I never think of the 1,2, and 3 movies....much preferring the original 3 movies produced. Back then, there were Star War toys, bed spreads, etc...most if not all directed towards kids.

With that said, I see most of the junk these days is directed towards adults...smart marketing as most of my generation who remember the first 3 movies fondly are in their 40s +. With that said, I am a bit shocked at just how much Star Wars branded merchandise is out there....it is almost enough to make me not want to see the movie. I would also like to point out that even with the latest 3 somewhat crappy Lucas movies, Star War merchandise isn't near the level that Walt Disney is milking it for.

As a fan and collector (mostly of Boba Fett related) it is a bit over the top. I wish they'd not shove just any cheap crap out the door even though we all know Disney acquired the Star Wars money tree to make money...

I have higher hopes for this new round vs the prequels.

Ok well they should have been a trilogy

I disagree.

Geaorge Lucas always knew not to push the limits too far so that die hard fans (like me) wouldn't get discouraged- like I am now.

Great movie, some great character development in the "good guys" maybe a little lacking in the dark side but a lot to take in.

Where is this spoiler discussion thread!?

I'm going to go see it, sure, but this weekend looks like it will be for the people who also go to walmart on christmas eve- for the bragging rights.

I heard some spoiler-free reviews from the web and everybody seemed to love it. Great acting, great effects, great action, great humor.
The verdict was split if it better than the original three or not but definitely leaps and bounds above the second threesome: less silly CGI, less wooden acting, less lame screenplay, less trade federation junk, no retarded midichloriens, no retarded Jar Jar.... ow yeah, and no obvious lens-flares.
I alreay bought my tickets for next Wednesday... hope I can avoid spoilers by then...
