Removing handles from knives...
on: February 01, 2013, 09:17:48 PM
I have an old, rusty kitchen knife which I'm using as a throwing knife. I had problems with removing the rivet "caps" - I couldn't remove them until I used an awl (Vic Rucksack  :D) and dug into the handle next to the rivet cap. Example how it looks:

Is there a way to remove them without damaging the handles?

You mean drilling trough the rivet caps and rivets? No, I guess drilling would damage both the caps and rivets. My goal is to disassemble and reassemble the knife handles, rivets and rivet caps unscratched.

I have never managed to disassemble one without ruining both the handle and the rivets
Have you thought of replacing the old handles with wood or micarta?
And can we have some pictures as you progress please  :tu:

Ya you'd have to drill out the rivets, since rivets are meant to not come apart.  You should be able to drill them out and save the scales if you're careful.
