My First Cheapie Posting - Pro-Case
on: February 03, 2013, 05:56:01 AM
I bought this over 14 years ago for around $5.  Pro-case brand, made in China.  The brad holding the knife blade came out the first week.  Really poor craftsmanship.

The fish scaler also has a ruler on it so you can "scale" your fish twice. Sorry couldn't resist.

Here's a cross-link to my thread on the general topic of the PST clone
http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,42474.0.html

I linked this thread to that one as well, for future reference.

I have to admit that I haven't really tortured my PST clones enough to know if they're going to fall apart easily, but neither gave me a sense that one of their pins were just going to fail. Not sure what happened with this one. That sucks.

Also... Fish Scaler! Wohoo!

what does a fish scaler actually do? And don't say "scale fish"...
Does anyone actually use them on an MT?

The intent of a fish scaler is to literally scrape the scales off of fish. I have NEVER needed one, and while I can't be 100% certain that I never will, I feel confident in making that assumption. They are there, as far as I can tell, because they are cheap and easy to make, and people look at it and think (it's got a saw!).

I know this because I have watched a number of youtube videos where people either assumed that a fish scaler WAS a saw, or stated directly that they could use the fish scaler as a saw. This is not true. In fact, on some cheap MTs, you can't even use the SAW as a saw (as with SAK knock-offs).

I would almost like to see a video of someone trying to cut a branch with a fish scaler. I'd be all

I can't believe it!  :ahhh  I actually have this! I know exactly where I got it - Walmart, for $10. It must have been 10-15 years ago. It came with a black nylon sheath. What you guys claim is a fish scaler, I had no idea what it was until today!

It's hands down the worst MT I ever used. It was also the first MT I ever owned. I remember pinching my hand bad one time while using the pliers between the two handles... Ever since it's sat in my fishing box and is reserved for getting fish hooks out of slimy fish - something I would never sully my Leatherman's for!

Thanks for posting!
