The LOG isn't entirely a knock-off; it comes equipped with the proprietary Chinese spring-loaded pliers and crappy phillips! :P :D
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Man, I'd jump all over that tool for $8.

But then, I don't exactly have the best judgement about buying cheap tools. :D

EDIT: Ahh... plus $7 shipping. While there are two of their stores in my metro area, they're like 40 miles away, which would cost me just about exactly $7 in gas round-trip. So... no win there.

Extra Editty good editness: Here's a link to the product:
http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200326683_200326683

I am more than a little intrigued. This is the lowest cost tool (even with shipping factored in) I've ever seen with locking tools.

Well....

You may all now avoid any urge you had of spending your money on this thing for the moment.

Because I spent MY money on one. Curiosity got the better of me, and in 5-7 business days it will arrive, and I will probably lament my unwise expenditure, but you will all benefit from my folly.

I've owned a tool very similar to that one.  It's really not that bad of a tool.  I ordered a similar one just to see how much usefulness could be had from a sub $10 tool.

From the looks of that one it appears to be made by the same factory.

Ultimately I found it to be quite useable, but small quality issues and the fact that I've become quite demanding/picky detracted from the overall appreciation of the tool.

It's still amazing to me what you can get for the price.  For that specific type of tool I was impressed with the pliers, and found the blade lock mechanism to be a blatant copy of the locks on the Leatherman Crunch.

Okay, my 'Mountain' edition tool arrived today from Northern Tools.

It is NOT the tool pictured. Not even remotely close.

I'll do a review after dinner, but to say I'm less than thrilled is an understatement.

Here's a link to my review of the tool they sent (which is not the tool pictured on their site).

Apart from the Leatherman Flair I also got this knock-off yesterday. No name on it, only a STAINLESS STEEL stamp. I am not sure which model it is a copy of, perhaps someone knowing these things better will enlighten me. It's not horrible, actually it's well built for 12€, blades are sharp and the tools seem to be working. Not a chance for one-handed opening though, the tool clumping is inherent in this MT. It smells kinda like a fish and it must be coming from the metal itself, not the oil. I think I'll pass it to a hobo down the street. Even if it doesn't work for him he won't be offended by it. :-\ I can't believe I knowingly wasted money on such a thing. That's what MTo membership does to one. Oh, well, that's the least of my problems :D Cheers

Edit: I forgot to mention that there was a tool much like the one shown on the first post and that mine came with a very similar pouch as well.

(You seem surprised they had it there) Yes, the guy said it was their last and that they had been clearing them for they were not selling well. He claimed he has had no complaints about this knock-off in some years he has been selling them. I wonder what one could complain about though? It is obviously a disposable tool  :ahhh

The last one? Oh, well. Pastras doesn't have it in Piraeus. Anyway, food tasks are what SAK's do better than a Leatherman.

To be honest I got it out of curiosity, to see Leatherman's quality and for the bloody fun factor: it seems the Flair is a picnic-orientated tool. I can do without one :)

If it is picnic oriented, what is the pliers for? Do they eat crabs and lobster at picnics?
Well, in our country they could. I hope it doesn't get rusty in islandic enviroment.  :D

The pliers are a substitute for chopsticks I think :D . I wonder what the spatula, mini trident, corkscrew and can opener are for

Hmm, looks a lot like an old style wave-clone, Firiki. Actually thought it was a Mammut, but that has a thumb stud instead of the OHO-holes...

Thanks, bmot. The more I look at it resemblances with mine become all the more striking

(Image removed from quote.)

It even has the small square holes on the blades. Could it be that they are made in the same factory, then sold to other suppliers to put some brand on them (in mine's case not even that) and then market them for what they are?  ???  :salute:
